Plusquellic, Brown: No support for TV host Springer for governor
Tuesday, January 25, 2005
Steve Luttner
Plain Dealer Reporter

Akron

Mayor Don Plusquellic said on Monday that he would not support Jerry Springer if the TV show host becomes the Democratic nominee for governor.

Springer and Plusquellic are among a handful of Ohio Democrats who are considering a run for governor in 2006. Plusquellic has spoken well of other possible Democratic gubernatorial candidates, but he had little good to say about Springer.

"It doesn't make sense for our party," Plusquellic said. "It will be a detriment to our party."

Tim Burke, chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party and a Springer supporter, said Springer has known all along that if he is going to do this, the people who vote will make that decision.

2. Nor I
Too much baggage. However this new radio program he's supposedly going to do in Cincinnati might help him rebuild some credibility.

3. Springer should stick to financing candidates.
I think Plusquellic could win Governor. I think Brown would be the best candidate against DeWine. It would be a shame to lose Brown's House seat though.

4. while Springer does have ties to Cincinnati (Hamilton County) the
fact that Burke is supporting him is odd...

Given that he (Burke) told me that there were no problems with long lines or otherwise in the precincts he visited on Election day, and that Alicia Reece (Vice Mayor of Cincinnati -- Hamilton County) was at Jackson's Rally on the 3rd of January, Livid because of the things that happened in Hamilton County (such as provisional ballot problems) and the treatment that people got during election day (challengers from out of the city challenging people who have been there most of their lives), something just doesn't seem to square up....

5. All bets are off on this one, or maybe they are on.
I think insider Democrats in this state will continue toward their downward spiral by supporting Springer. It's all but a done deal.

Springer has been flitting around Ohio kissing babies, shaking hands, and planting money in the fields of rural Democratic organizations like a drunken sailor. He has been on his quiet mission for more than 18 months.

He has spoken at local Dem fund raisers and passed the envelope to the guy standing at the door when he leaves.

Be very afraid for the state of Ohio.

Having said all this "the sky is falling" stuff, Springer is far above Bush in his intellect, vision, and experience.

The only difference is that the GOP knows how to run a campaign, and the Dem's just stand around with their fingers in their nose.

6. Burke and Springer go back more than thirty years...
Jerry was the Kennedyesque City Councilman and Burke was a mover in the Xavier University college Democrats. They've been friends through everything.

I love Jerry. If you've ever spent more than two minutes in his presence, you know that you're talking to one of the smartest guys in politics. That being said, I hope that he doesn't run for elected office; his television show is just too much deadweight to overcome, and I think he can be more effective acting as an independent liberal voice. He should be the guy who "isn't running for anything" and so he'll tell you the whole truth.

Even though he has little experience in talk radio, his name alone would be enough to get his show syndicated nationwide faster than any of the more seasoned liberal talkers out there. Four years of Jerry coast-to-coast could have a huge impact on the 2008 election.

7. Alicia Reese? What a joke.
She's always looking out for number 1, her self. Bring a TV camera within 5 blocks of her and she'll sniff it out. She's a rabble-rousing, self-centered opportunist. I have absolutely no respect for her. Hell, listen to her radio show. Laketa Cole, now she's the best. She does her homework, asks good questions, and quietly does her work.

10. Jerry sold his soul to the devil
Jerry once a serious office holder and liberal political pundit. Then he went off and did a white trash talk show in order to make millions of dollars. Jerry had a choice and he took the money over credibility. So let him live his choice.
