Buckeye Boycotts -- Help Needed, Please.
We need help in assembling a boycott list (see "Progressive Pages" forum post).

If you link to:

http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php

and type in your zip code you can see WHO has given money and TO WHOM.

I'll research a couple of zip codes -- 45459 and 45458.

Did you see any shrub signs outside a business you frequent? Or how about a sign for KE? We need those names, too.

Who else can help???

However, it does go to show that the red and blue designations are correct for both Michigan (Kerry) and Ohio (*)

4. Here's a few
InfoCision (in Bath, Ohio) - HUGE Repuke influence. Even some articles in the Beacon Journal about how they poll FOR REPUBLICANS.

Richfield Sign Company (Richfield, Ohio) - Huge signs in the windows 9/1/2003 for the Bush praise-a-thon.

Zeppe's Pizzaria (not sure about donations, but if you encounter them, point out that they advertise on the Right-wing stations, and that's why you will never do them again).

9. Why are you doing this?
I'm sorry - but why are you planning to boycott businesses/people who supported bush AFTER the election? What does this accomplish other than further needless derisiveness? Keep in mind that there are midterms, and a gubernatorial race in '06, and that in order to win those - you need some of those that voted for Bush - offending them now with petty acts of revenge might not be the best way to do that.

12. Pointing out the obvious once again...
We did NOT lose in numbers. Our votes were STOLEN.

There is no getting over the divisiveness in this country. It will only get worse no matter WHAT we do.

We are protecting our hard-earned dollars from going into the pockets of those who would harm us through their actions or their votes.

Continue to shop where you want. But we won't be joining you.

13. How were they stolen?
I'm sorry, but how were they stolen?

I was on the ground in Ohio with the campaign, and my work there included work with our own election protection workers. In the county that I was working in, there was nothing stolen. We were beaten by better organization, and by a sort of campaign ruthlessness we weren't able to match.

We really need to move forward. Continuing to claim that the election was stolen isn't productive. Boycotting supporters isn't productive. And as long as we do nothing, or worse, act out in unproductive ways, it will only get more devisive. We can appeal to more voters without sacrificing our ideals - we just need to make our message better.

This only makes our message worse.

Quit saying they won. They didn't "win." They stole. And if any of us want to boycott, we'll do that too. You don't have to participate. Just sit there crying into your spilt milk lamenting their "better organization."

What do YOU consider productive? Cuz that ain't it.

19. An example:
I have a friend who is VP of a large corporation. Last Thursday, her stock broker told her how happy he was that bushco won the election.

OK, so this guy over stepped his boundaries, but she's angry and wants to move her investments to another broker -- and no, she doesn't even want to deal with this guy's boss; she's angry.

She asked me if I knew of a Dem-friendly investment manager; she may even suggest a new manager for her entire corporation (yes, she has that much clout).

Oh, and she'll let the current stock broker know WHY she's moving her bucks. As I said, she's angry -- she worked hard on this election, donated a nice sum to K-E, even met Kerry in the middle of the night when he arrived at our airport.

I would LOVE to be able to give her some names.

21. there's a difference
There's a substantial difference between frequenting businesses that share your views, and boycotting those that don't.

I applaud the former. It's another way of making your voice heard. My wife and I invest in funds that include only companies that are considered socially and environmentally responsible. We purchase long distance and wireless service from a company that supported the Election Protection efforts, and gives a substantial portion of it's profit to charity (chosen by it's customers) each year.

However, actively boycotting local businesses because of the owners personal political beliefs will not aide the greater good. It will only remind them that we're "different" and that we think they're "different" too. In truth, the country isn't so divided. we have a responsibility to the community to try to find some common ground - and we have a responsibility to our cause not to further alienate those who's vote we might someday need. Just because the supported Bush this time around doesn't mean that they might not someday be swayed to your/our cause. They're especially likely to cross party lines for local candidates. Someday, one of us might be that candidate. Who knows.

Even in the majority Republican county I worked in there were swing voters. There are those that said they didn't really like President Bush, but couldn't vote for Kerry. Those people aren't forever lost to our cause. Not yet. Not unless we push them further away.

Just think about that a little.

39. Once again--It's not just their beliefs.
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 01:13 PM by fudge stripe cookays
It's their money, and where it's going.

We are looking them and their donations up. And cross referencing our cross references.

Wake up. This was the election of the century. If these people didn't consider crossing over this time, they AREN'T GOING TO. the people we're boycotting aren't fence sitters. They're the ones who voice their "glorious" support of Bush wherever they go, and have to do it so loudly that they put Bush signs up at their businesses. Sorry, but that makes them fair game.

These people loathe us and everything we stand for. If they can afford to donate anywhere from $500 to $25,000 to Bush or the RNC, they can afford to lose our Democratic business. They are not hurting.

I don't care how great their service is, or how good their food is. They are attempting to destroy the fabric of our country ANd our Constitution by their money and support of this asshole.

It's all about the money. If you can't understand that, then stop responding to these posts. We "thought about it a little", we just aren't listening to you.

Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 07:21 PM by nownow
So far, all the groceries -- WalMart, of course; Kroger; Albertson's -- give immensely more to the GOP than Dems. I'm guessing Meijer is the same. We don't have a Costco within thirty miles, so that's not an option for perishables -- we've been buying lots of groceries at Trader Joe's, they at least appear to be conscientious about their treatment of employees and sales of organics, free trade items and products in recycled/recyclable packaging. Even if they contribute to GOoPers, at least their general policies are good.

Edit -- on the 'Follow The Money' website that gives info on donations, apparently Staples gives somewhat more to Dems. That's the closest office supply store for us, so that made me feel better about buying from them.

32. The Mr. and I have done this all along.
I'd rather do it as a 'positive' movement than a 'negative' movement, but most companies are kind of cagey about it. If I can't find out a company does share my values, but I know for sure one doesn't, I'll sort it out that way!

30. Oh -- not politics, necessarily, but ...
definitely a matter of ideology -- keep or discard at will.

This applies only to Dayton/MontCo. Arrow Wines and Liquors covered up its French and German wines for about a month back in 2003, after Germany and France refused to join the 'coalition of countries blowing brown people to bits.' I'd venture a guess they're also GOP supporters, but that ain't necessarily so -- some Dems did support the invasion of Iraq.

Lizzie,

This is exactly the kind of info we need for the Progressive Pages. Can you get the address and that of The Golden Lamb and either enter the info in the Progressive Pages or add to your Ohio post and I'll enter?

Link here:

http://www.globalblogs.com/progressivepages/index.html

BTW, The Golden Lamb is owned by Rob Portman and that's why shrub spoke there in April. I tried to join a protest, but the streets were blocked off and we couldn't get near the place -- even though we had a permit for a "free speech zone" at the library.

Since Portman owned the place, he could keep us away from his property.

Keep thinking; I appreciate your efforts.

35. CabinetPak in Cincinnati, Galbraith Road
The CabinetPak store on Galbraith Road, right near the Cross-County Highway ramp, did not display any election signs before November 2, but on November 3, they dragged out a huge light-up display sign that now reads "THANK GOD FOR PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH" on one side and "THANK GOD FOR GW!!" on the other. That part of Galbraith Road gets one of the highest car-counts in the city, and apparently the owner of CabinetPak wants to make sure as many Cincinnatians as possible are subjected to his personal opinions of God and Chimp.
