Kiss High Speed Rail goodbye for Ohio
Gov.-elect seeks end to rail deals
Ohio's incoming Republican governor is sticking with plans to scrap high-speed rail, a decision the federal government said will cost the state millions of dollars.

John Kasich, who succeeds Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland in January, asked Strickland on Monday to immediately cancel all passenger rail contracts to save taxpayer money.

Kasich sent letters to both Strickland and President Barack Obama telling them he doesn't plan to support developing a passenger line connecting Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland.

"As you are aware, I am opposed to this program and will terminate it upon taking office," Kasich wrote Strickland. "Given that, I am sure that you will agree that it would simply be wasteful to spend any additional money on this program. At a time when Ohio is facing an approximately $8 billion budget shortfall, every step should be taken to eliminate waste and prevent unnecessary spending."

Kasich asked Obama for the ability to use the state's $400 million rail allocation for other things. He said if that's not possible, the federal government should keep the money to help reduce the federal deficit.

I have a feeling I'll be leaving the state for greener pastures soon

2. Don't Worry
When the people of Ohio finally wake up and realize that Kasich has no plan to help them and has no intention of following through on his promises, and when they see that the Republicans who all vowed to bring back jobs and save the economy will do NEITHER, they'll vote Kasich out of office emphatically. I predict Richard Cordray will be elected Governor in 2014.

The only problem is, can you wait 4 years for that to happen? And can Ohio survive that long?

Ohio is going to be playing the role of Marcellus Wallace and John Kasich will be playing the role of Zed. And Bruce Willis won't be coming down the stairs anytime soon.

4. Don't forget how bad Taft was and he served two terms...

I have come to the conclusion that the majority of Ohio voters are about as stupid as stupid gets! Of course I live in SW Ohio (Mason) and I am surrounded by these idiots which makes me a little biased towards the cynical.

Every time someone on this forum said that Bonner might lose his bid in the Ohio 8th Congressional district this election or any election since 2001 when I joined DU I would chime in and say no way. The voters in the Ohio 2nd and 8th Congressional districts are bat shit crazy. They were teabaggers before the movement started! And as a side I will always address Boehner as Bonner until he stops calling the Democratic Party the Democrat Party. He is about as annoying a fucking asshole as I have ever seen. And while I am on a rant we will never get rid of Schmidt in the 2nd Ohio Congressional District until the fucking bitch dies, then she will be replaced by someone just as bad. If it were not for my wife's job there is no way we would be here in Ohio.

My apologies for the rant but this election really got to me. We can only hope that the voters will see the republicans as what they truly are but they can and will do a lot of damage in the meantime.

On edit: With the elimination of the high speed rail in Ohio there will be 1,600 less jobs. Way to go Kasich. I will miss Ted Strickland. I did not agree on everything he did but overall he was a hell of good Governor for Ohio.

6. Strickland was a hell of a lot better than the alternative...
he was also my congressman until the district got gerrymandered by the republicans. Living in SW Ohio anything is better than a republican or teabagger.

7. no, you're exactly right
I voted for him again. Better than Taft or Voinovich, certainly.

Though even they might have been better than Kasich will be...

8. Maybe we should launch a "Wall Street John Kasich Job Death Toll"
16K jobs on the high-speed rail project ...

and now, Kasich bows to the Religious Reichies on the "casino" issue ... casinos are poised to be built in Ohio ... but the issue "needs more study" ...

10. Ridiculous

Of all things in this election, this issue pissed me off more then the rest. Infrastructure like a high-speed rail should never ever be a partisan issue. Especially when it would be extremely beneficial for a state that lacks great public transportation like Ohio. Kasich is a joke, he will be a one and done.
