Gov. Strickland wants to eliminate tax cuts to address budget trouble

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Ted Strickland announced this morning that he wants to eliminate the final year of an income tax reduction to address a looming $900 million budget hole.

Strickland also said he is setting aside, for now, his wish to add slot machine gambling at the state's seven horse racing tracks until legal issues surrounding that move are resolved.

Strickland, a Democrat, said he expected his political opponents to equate this to a tax increase. But the governor said it is not because "tax rates are staying the same as last year." ...

Thank you Governor Strickland! I'm so glad to hear this. I've been thinking for months that they should just freeze the '08 tax rates. It seemed like common sense to me. The Republicans passed these tax cuts without paying for them... big surprise... Combine that with the recession and Ohio is looking at falling off a cliff and not being able to invest in itself and its citizens enough to come out of the recession with a bright future.

Ted made me proud today.

1. Excellent move.
And the right wing bloggers are crying that it's a tax hike.

2. of course they are... it is sooooo their M.O.
Anyway - the facts remain.. personal income tax rates will still be lower than they were when Strickland took office.

4. Yes indeed
FDR was the model. It's time for the rich to accept a tax hike.
