<<COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and other top Ohio Democrats are calling on Attorney General Marc Dann to resign.

Strickland, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, Dann's fellow Democratic state officeholders and all Democratic state lawmakers have sent Dann a letter Monday urging him to step down.<<

The text of Ted's letter is at the link.

Checkmate, me thinks.

1. I just read his letter and think he is in a deep state of denial;
I bet we'll hear that he's gone into some sort of psychological treatment shortly. I would advise that; he obviously has no idea how over the top his behavior has become, and he needs help. Perhaps we're not feeling compassionate at the moment, but I think he needs some sort of support, too, or things are going to become desperate for him.

2. He just doesn't get it, does he?
Either he's in denial, or it's a bad combination of arrogance and stubbornness.

Strickland and the Ohio Democrats don't have time for this right now.

3. I wonder who will be the one to get thru to him....

this is starting to look stupid. As a psychologist, it seems like Strickland would have handled this differently. Handing out threats is not the way to go about a humane intervention, whatever the anger levels.

4. And I disagree with Dann's email to his staff.
Edited on Mon May-05-08 03:28 PM by Kukesa
He's lost their respect and there's no way they'll loyally put this behind them. There'll be whispering and jokes.

He blew it.

As far as Strickland's, et al, letter is concerned, he and the others put it out there as plainly as they could; either Dann resigns or articles of impeachment begin. No quarter.

Dann tells them "screw you" in so many words.

To be continued.

5. Impeach and be done with it.
How can Dann even seriously think that he is calling Ted Strickland's, Sherrod Brown's, Jennifer Brunner's, et. al., bluff with this?

This is yet one more major political embarrassment for the state -- and a distraction that quite frankly pisses me off.

6. But according to the PD editorial you previously posted,
Edited on Mon May-05-08 03:55 PM by Kukesa
"Dann may be right that, based on what's known right now, there are no grounds to impeach him. Nor is there any way for a "very disappointed" Ted Strickland to force him from office."

What are "grounds to impeach him?"

Since Strickland clearly stated in his letter that proceedings will begin if Dann doesn't resign, he and the others who signed the letter must know something the PD doesn't.

8. I can't believe Dann's reply
The letter kinda indicates that he has NO support from the rest of the Dems at the state level ... and those are the folks who are on his side.

Dann needs to know it's time to go home to Youngstown.

9. I think the dems have to run the clock out on this play
Edited on Tue May-06-08 07:34 AM by MeDeMax
(on edit typo)
Dann has been asked to step down, all dem events are off limits to him now, he cannot get re-elected to a precinct captain for the foreseeable future and the PD reports that Ted has moving ahead to prepare for a replacement :

While Dann stays, Democrats are making plans as if he will go. Strickland would pick his replacement for the interim, and the governor said he already has a short list of candidates, though he would not reveal names.

I am proud of the dems for the way they handled this situation. It sends a strong message to voters and other officeholders that Ohio is serious about progress.

10. I am wondering what was said in initial conversations....
I have to respectfully disagree with you, because I think this is going terribly. Plus, I am really worried that as Dann becomes more and more isolated, he may become a danger to himself or others. I am seriously alarmed.

If the work atmosphere was hostile before, it's got to be downright fearful and in a state of paralysis. Not good. They have got to get him out of there, and he can't go back.

12. poli I don't think we have a disagreement, my post was ambiguous
when I said "run out the clock", I meant giving him a few days to think things over and resign. I did not mean letting him serve the rest of his office term.

Politically & psychologically the party has him boxed in corner. Now they keep him there and let a few days pass so he can see the futility of plan to continue as AG.

They legislature can pass a censure motion, but the threat of having the issue heard on the house floor should persuade Dann to resign.

Sorry, my post pretty ambiguous.

14. I am just as bothered by the level of substance abuse as the hostility of the workplace.
I don't think Dann is thinking clearly for a lot of reasons. The Animal House characterization trivializes the seriousness.

17. And what I mean .by this is that Dann is not in his "right" mind.
His decision making ability is impaired.
