<<snip>>YELLOW SPRINGS — Antioch College will shutter its campus in July 2008 because of a lack of money and declining enrollment, the private, liberal arts college said Tuesday.

The school will regroup for four years and hopes to find the financial resources to reopen an overhauled campus in 2012.

The undergraduate college, which has a rich history in social activism, has watched enrollment drop from its 1960s heyday of about 2,000 students to 400 today, LaPierre said.

Enrollment dropped nearly 25 percent between 1998 and 2005, according to the Ohio Board of Regents.<<snip>>

I find this to be particularly sad, in that the main reason was it could not compete for what one college official called "the new millenium student," who apparently wants a high-class dorm and other amenities. The cuts that the school already has made has also apparently undermined confidence in the school's ability to educate.

Notable Antioch grads, by the way, include Coretta Scott King, Stephen Jay Gould, and Rod Serling.

ON EDIT: WYSO apparently will not be affected. For once.

2. According to the DDN story....
Tuition and fees at Antioch are $28,500 a year. Compare that to the University of Dayton at $25,950. Many could say that Antioch was becoming an irrelevance academically...that it never moved beyond the 1960s...I'm not looking for a debate. I just feel a loss when any academic institution closes. Antioch has a rich history, and certainly has contributed to the uniqueness that is Yellow Springs.

Antioch also has a system of other schools throughout the United States.

3. I wasn't looking to debate my friend...
I am distressed by how colleges that were setup to educate the nation's children have turned into for-profit businesses.

They have completely lost sight of their core objective, namely to educate Americans for tomorrow. They no longer compete on how many of their products go on to publish groundbreaking theories, but use other metrics like NBA draft picks and CEO salaries.

Sorry to see such a rich tradition fade...
