Cost of Ohio colleges outpaces nation
Education at 4-year state schools 45% higher

By KIM BATES
BLADE STAFF WRITER

When it comes to paying tuition bills in Ohio, the average four-year public university student can expect to pay 45 percent more than others nationally to get a degree.

That figure jumps to 52 percent more for community college students, compared to what their peers are assessed in other states.

The tuition findings were just a few of the comparisons contained in the annual Ohio Board of Regents performance report, which was released yesterday. The report includes institutional data as well as overall snapshots of higher education in the state — in both the public and private sectors.

According to the regents, average undergraduate tuition for state-supported, four-year campuses was $7,941 for this academic year, compared to $5,491 nationally. At two-year schools, students pay $3,328 in Ohio, compared to $2,191 for other U.S. areas...

1. Cheaper to go outstate
One of Strickland's talking points is that it is cheaper for an Ohio resident to pay out-of-state tuition at the University of Kentucky than to pay instate tuition a state university in Ohio.

3. You don't need smart Ohioans
when you can hire them cheaper in India. If Taft's golf buddies had to rely on the graduates of Ohio colleges to do their work, you can bet there would be a lot less concern about decreasing business taxes (and decreasing support for public universities), and more concern about making college affordable for all qualified students.
