Poll question: Who to replace Sherrod Brown in the 13th?
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 04:56 PM by Deep13
This is Lorain Co., part of Summit Co. and Akron and the northern 1/4 of Medina Co. It is west of Akron and SW of Cleveland.

These are the ones I know about. Don't know who the Rs will run. District leans Dem., but no guarantees around here.

1. If Paul Hackett gets the win in the Primaries on May 2nd....
then will Sherrod stay in place and run as a Congressman?

2. No doubt he will
but its very unlikely that Hackett will win. His campaign seems to be flaming out these days.

3. He can't....
You can't run for the Senate and the House at the same time....

4. What I need to say is that if Brown does
not win the Primary in May, he can probably then keep his seat in the House. If he wins the Senate Primary in May, then indeed, I realize he can not run for both.

5. Doesn't one have to file in February?
I thought, to be on the ballot, candidates had to file for an office in February. After that, one can be a write-in or, if a nominated candidate becomes unavailable, the Party can field a replacement.

But I'm pretty sure that you can't file for one office, lose the Primary, and then run (with your name on the ballot) for a different office in the General.

Am I wrong?

6. You are absolutely correct In years past, many candidates
waited in the wings for the last minute to file their petitions to be on the ballot. I think Ohio Revised Code says petitions must be filed 90 days before the election date.

7. The only time you can do that now is if you are
running for president or Vice President....

Sherrod is gone if he looses the primary...

8. I'd love it if we could have BOTH
Brown and Hackett representing us! I wish Brown would stay put and let Hackett take on DeWine.

What are the chances a Repub would take Brown's seat if he wins the primary? It would really suck if Brown's seat went Repub and DeWine stays put...

One thing we all need to be aware of is Blackwell is blanketing the state with Diebold Touchscreens. If you have any doubt that this is a very bad thing, take a look at The Companies and the Technology chapters at Who's Counting. Once you see what we're up against, check out the "What Can I Do" chapter and get involved!!

9. I'd rather have Hackett take a another crack at Schmidt.
He will do better in a general, high-turnout election. Hackett does not have the funding connections, campaign instincts or constituent base that Brown has. Brown really is our best chance to take out DeWine and the first credible candidate to challenge him in years. DeWine will be tough to beat.

10. Cafaro may be looking to replace Sherrod Brown
http://www.morningjournal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15942443&BRD=1699&PAG=461&dept_id=46371&rfi=6

SCOT ALLYN, Morning Journal Writer01/17/2006

SHEFFIELD VILLAGE -- A Youngstown-area businesswoman and former congressional candidate has moved to Lorain County and is eyeing a run for U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown's 13th District seat this fall, according to two local Democratic leaders.

Tom Smith, Lorain County Democratic chairman, said yesterday that Capri Cafaro, who ran in 2004 to represent the 14th Congressional District, has purchased a home in Sheffield Village. Smith said Cafaro has said she plans to run to replace Brown, who late last year announced he would be running for Senate.

''She told me she's running,'' said Smith. ''She said she was in the process of moving into her new home last week when we spoke.''

Cafaro's spokesman, Vic Rubenstein, could not be reached for comment. Cafaro would not confirm or deny yesterday whether she plans to throw her hat in the race for Brown's seat...

11. The one day I skip reading the MJ....
...this is not good news, and I am beginning to hate the UAW leadership if it really true they are encouraging her. Tom Smith rarely goes on record about the intentions of candidates and Guiardini is equally tight-lipped, so if it weren't true, I would really be surprised. This is terrible.

Where are you, Tom SAWYER?

13. "Where are you, Tom SAWYER?"
Good question. Haven't heard much from him. Maybe with the unions irritated at him for NAFTA, he thinks his chances are not so good. Frankly, I think most of the damage done by shipping jobs overseas would have occurred with or without NAFTA. After all, China is not part of that treaty.

14. Tom Sawyer
If he is running, he needs to get a presence on the internet. I would work on his behalf.

I'd be more than happy to campaign for him, he's a great candidate, strong on health care and education issues.

Foltin 'thinking about' bid for Brown's seat

http://www.morningjournal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15958015&BRD=1699&PAG=461&dept_id=46371&rfi=6

SCOT ALLYN, Morning Journal Writer

LORAIN -- Mayor Craig Foltin still has not committed to running for Ohio's 13th Congressional District seat, but insists he's giving it some serious thought.

''I'm thinking about it,'' said Foltin. ''A lot of regular citizens have been asking me to run and offering to volunteer. It's encouraging, but I haven't reached a conclusion yet. I want to see where the dust settles with other candidates first.''...

Brunswick City Councilman and former congressional candidate Jack Shira also announced his candidacy this week, and former Akron Mayor and 14th District Rep. Tom Sawyer has said he expects to officially enter the race soon...

If Foltin does not run, he said, his party would field a good candidate. Joe Ortega, a Strongsville businessman who filed his paperwork to run in August, would be a good choice, he said...

McEwen challenges Jean Schmidt to primary rematch ("to return dignity")

< Thor Jacobs, 47, a small construction company owner from Cincinnati with no political experience, is the only declared Democratic candidate. >

http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/13654382.htm

WASHINGTON - Former U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen said on Wednesday that he would challenge Rep. Jean Schmidt in the May primary election, promising to return dignity and experience to the seat...

After McEwen's formal announcement of a rematch Wednesday at an Anderson Township hospital, Barry Bennett, Schmidt's chief of staff, said Schmidt would point out the failures in McEwen's 12 years in the U.S. House.

"It's appropos McEwen made his announcement from a hospital because his campaign is in critical condition," Bennett said. "This is all about Bob, this is about Bob's ego, and we'll make it about his record, and it's less than stellar."

17. Schira not a City Councilman.
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 11:06 AM by Deep13
He was a Brunswick Hills Township (not city) trustee but lost his bid for reelection in 2003.

Fact checker on vacation Mt. Allyn?

Also, Bennett used 'apropos' incorrectly. It is an adverb that means concerning or relevent.

Wrong: Schmidt's 'crypt-keeper' visage is apropos considering her personality.

Correct: Schmidt made an ass of herself by her comments apropos of Murtha's imagined cowardice.

18. Schira will run in 13th District
http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/local/states/ohio/counties/medina_county/13669215.htm

Add former Brunswick Hills trustee John ``Jack'' Schira to the growing list of candidates vying for the 13th District Congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown.

Schira, 67, a retired U.S. Air Force officer who calls himself a ``hard-core Democrat'' opted to announce his candidacy Thursday evening at Cool Beans coffee shop in Medina...

In the May 2 Democratic primary, Schira is expected to face off against Tom Sawyer, a former congressman, Akron mayor and state representative; Betty Sutton of Munson Township in Geauga County, a former state representative from Barberton; Akron lawyer John Wolfe; and Youngstown shopping mall heiress Capri Cafaro.

On the Republican side, Joe Ortega of Strongsville and David McGrew of Akron have announced they intend to run.
