GF Herald LTTE: Time to retire 12yrs of GOP failed policies
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 11:05 AM by Skinner
I thought this letter to the editor in the Grand Forks Herald was really to the point.

http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/news/local/11183416.htm

"Time comes to retire GOP's failed strategies

GRAND FORKS - How many times do the Republicans get to take a test before it's graded?

A Bismarck Tribune editorial, "Testing a GOP theory," that was reprinted in the March 11 Herald suggests that the Bismarck-Mandan area will be conducting a revealing test of Republican strategies for economic development.

In fact, Bismarck and the rest of North Dakota have been testing those theories for the past 12 years, and the results are mediocre at best.

Since the inauguration of Gov. Ed Schafer in 1993, Republicans have been in control of state government in North Dakota. Budget priorities, tax policy, economic development strategy, health care, funding levels for K-12 and higher education - all have reflected the Republican ideology.

1. "...for most of those 12 years, we've lagged well behind
the national economy and only caught up in a few statistics in the last year."

And I suspect that is because of the rest of the country failing, not because of ND gaining.

2. I point out that liberals have been out of power in the Federal
government since 1969; that while Democrats may have held a majority in terms of party members, many of those Democrats were southerners who sided with the GOP on most issues being voted on; that Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were both conservative southern Democrats; and that the GOP has had a lock on Congress for eleven years now. I keep asking them how long it takes for their policies to have an effect that ordinary working people can feel, that it's gotten steadily worse for working people since Lyndon Johnson left office and liberal programs started to be dismantled.

I ask them how long it's going to take for the right to acknowledge responsibility for their 35 years of rule, and when the reviled liberals are going to be seen for what they are, people who have been shut out of power and out of real decision making for those 35 years.

I never get an answer. They are so used to blaming liberals for all the ills of the world they have totally lost the ability to think clearly about the past 35 years of their own rule and what their responsibility for the present debt, robbing social security, loss of jobs, depressed wages, and now contracting consumer market might be.
