Sheehan, Yearwood bring impeachment to Greensboro July 18

Greensboro – The Student Government Association of Bennett College is hosting a presentation by peace activists Cindy Sheehan of the Camp Casey Peace Institute, the Rev. Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus and Debra Sweet, national Director of The World Can’t Wait! at 6:15 PM Wednesday, July 18 in the Pfeiffer Science Auditorium on the Bennett College Campus.

Sheehan has embarked on a “Journey for Humanity” that began in Crawford Texas, will pass through Washington D.C. and arrive at the United Nations in New York on July 27th. She has been joined by members of Veterans for Peace. Her Greensboro visit is co-sponsored by NC World Can’t Wait!, Grassroots Impeachment Movement and Parents and Citizens for Truth in Military Recruiting.

The Greensboro stop is part of a multi-state and multi-city tour that Sheehan is leading to bring attention to the urgency of impeaching the Bush administration for a mounting series of high crimes against the U.S. Constitution, violations of international law, and dereliction of duty. Among these are unauthorized wiretapping, lying to Congress and the world community in the lead up to the Iraq War and failure to manage the rescue of Hurricane Katrina victims or the rebuilding of New Orleans.

“We are honored and happy to host this program for our students and the greater Greensboro community”, said Tiffany Lindsay, President of the Bennett College S.G.A.

“Right after the Democratic victory in 2006, Nancy Pelosi declared that ‘Impeachment is off the table’ and the new Congress continued to fund the war. This is contrary to the sentiments of the people in the U.S. who overwhelmingly oppose the war and are now 45% in favor of impeaching President Bush and 57% in favor of impeaching Cheney”. “The people say that impeachment is ON the table and the government will hear our footsteps!”, said Scott Trent, local member of World Can’t Wait!
The tour has planned visits to members of Congress who are on the Judiciary Committee and have the authority to begin the process of impeachment.
The tentative schedule for Greensboro is:
Wednesday 2:00 PM – Visit U.S. Rep Mel Watt’s office at 301 South Greene St.*
6:15 PM – S.G.A. Bennett College Program (enter Gorrell St.)
Thursday 10:00AM – Visit Howard Coble’s office at 2102 N. Elm St.
*A press conference may be held at this time. The media is invited to talk to Ms. Sheehan, Rev. Yearwood, Debra Sweet and others at any of the events. For more info: www.campcaseypeaceinstitute.org

4. Sheehan was in Charlotte on Tuesday
I have a report on her visit on my blog.
I was at the rally, but counter protesters made sure Sheehan didn't get a chance to speak.x(

5. They treated her like dirt and threatened her with physical violence in Charlotte.
I saw the story about it on WSOC (channel 9) news. I wish I could have made it there, but something tells me I would have been pummeled by those thugs on the other side of the issue. :grr:
