DUers Statewide: Anybody interested in an All-NC DU party?

We have so many faboulous DUers all across the state: Me! (;-) ) Struggle4Progress, WannaJumpMySchooter, Jarnocan, et al. I'd love the chance to meet you all and swap stories in person. :hi:

Looking at the calendar I was just realizing that Memorial Day is on the way. There are many great DUers all over this state and I think it would be fun to meet somewhere centrally located for the day, maybe like a state park.

We could have a cookout, throw a frizbee or two, have a couple of brewskis. I investigated a couple of parks around here and the pattern seems to be $20/shelter for the day for a small group, $85/large group shelter.

What say you?

and environs is what I was thinking of. I was thinking of people coming in from Western NC.

The triangle folks have meet in Raleigh before, but not recently, b/c Raleigh people don't show up. :P

edit: I'm not sold on a locale yet, just thinking outloud. My goal is to not have anybody drive say more than 2 hours.

7. That is a hopeless goal

Those of us at I 95 or east are well over two hours from Greensboro but Asheville is also over 2 hours from there. Greensboro would be OK with me though as I have friends there that I could also go see but you might want to minimize total travel instead. Charolette where I have never been could be fun. The only problem I see with Memorial Day is that more than a few districts don't get Memorial Day off (Wake County does).

Charlotte might work. I haven't been there in years, and it would be fun to visit again.

If you do have it in Charlotte, I can recommend some places to eat.

There's Lupie's Cafe, near where Monroe becomes 7th Street. It's closed on Sundays, though. Anyway, the prices are very reasonable and the food is great, which means there's usually a bit of a line. It has mostly burgers and chili and vegetables and a different special for every night of the week.

I very highly recommend Landmark, on Central. Also reasonable prices, and a huge menu so everyone can find something they like.

And if you have room for dessert, their chocolate cheesecake is perfect. I hear the rest of their desserts are pretty good too.

And if you're into pizza, the original Fuel Pizza is down Central a bit from Landmark. It's a converted old gas station. The other ones (it's a small local chain) try for the old gas station ambience, but it's just not the same.

14. Is there a park with shelters?

I'm looking for a park with shelters. In know there probably is; I used to live in Charlotte, but at the moment I'm drawing a blank.

I'm thinking more in terms of a picnic day so people who want to can bring games and kids.

10. I would actually suggest the Sunday before Memorial day

advantage is everyone gets those off and those who get both off can use the second day for travel if need be.

we could do either Sat the 19th or Sun the 20th. Otherwise, we could try for Sat the 26th or Sun the 27th.
