11. No my home DSL is still screwy
It's a more involved problem than I had origianlly thought. I'm going to have to get a phone tech to come look at the wiring, I think.

13. I'd be willing to do a joint Triangle/Triad meetup sometime. But ..
.. I can't do anything midweek.

It looks to me like we're talking either American Tobacco Warehouse (downtown Durham) or a cookout at somebody's home for this weekend ...

14. well I haven't put the champagne on ice yet
but I'm drinking the beer in any case.
If folks around the Winston-Salem/Greensboro area want a get together, my place could be available sometime, we have space possibly for out of towners to crash-extra bedrooms and couches.
I'm also willing to got to either town to meet, and hmmm, maybe talk about Rory Blake for congress etc.
I just went to a Center for Progressive leadership training- kind of interesting, concerning how to build positive relations with local media, handle press releases for events etc.

On Tuesday, July 18th, the Center for Progressive Leadership is holding Media Impact Trainings in house parties across the country.

I'm the grouchy really-dirty-blond guy in a grey shirt and old black pants wearing glasses.

We may have a DU sticker on our table. We'll probably be there a while. :)

29. Triana (for supernova et al)

bytheway, we had a great time Saturday! It was good to see the local evil DUers again!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triana_(satellite)

Just FYI where the name came from... ...note what the Repukes had to say about it. The program was scrapped as soon as bu$hit took office.
_ _ _ _ _

Triana is a NASA satellite proposed in 1998 by former Vice President Al Gore for the purpose of earth observation. It is intended to be positioned at the Earth's L1 Lagrangian point, at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers. At this location it will have a continuous view of the Sun-lit side of the Earth.

The satellite's original purpose was to provide a near continuous view of the entire Earth and make that live image available via the Internet. Gore hoped not only to advance science with these images, but also to raise awareness of the Earth itself, updating the influential The Blue Marble photograph taken by Apollo 17.

In addition to an imaging camera, a radiometer would take the first direct measurements of how much sunlight is reflected and emitted from the whole Earth. This data could constitute a barometer for the process of Global Warming. The scientific goals expanded to measure the amount of solar energy reaching Earth, cloud patterns, weather systems, monitor the health of Earth's vegetation, and track the amount of UV light reaching the surface through the ozone layer.

Derided by critics as being an unfocused project, the satellite was nicknamed GoreSat, and was often referred to as an "overpriced screen saver" by Republicans. Congress asked the National Academy of Sciences whether the project was worthwhile. The resulting report stated that the mission was "strong and vital".

Triana was named after Rodrigo de Triana, the first of Colombus's crew to sight land in the Americas. NASA renamed the satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), in an attempt to regain support for the project.

Faced with political hostility on one side and scientific support on the other, Triana could neither be launched nor could it be terminated. Triana was removed from its original launch opportunity on STS-107. The $100 million satellite remains in storage at a cost of $1 million a year.

.. than sending a few boys and girls on a long pointless Mars flyby.

31. yea, it is...
...and it would have (still could) provide(d) lots of data about the Earth's atmosphere and climate change and greenhouse gasses and their effects. But - bu$hit scrapped it the minute he squatted in the Oval Office and it is being stored someplace at a cost of $1 million per year to American taxpayers, apparently. bu$hit doesn't want anyone to have any environmental data or any atmospheric information from any satellites (he's been shutting them off) - especially the one that had anything to do with Gore. He wouldn't even allow that one to launch, even though it was ready to go.

Weaselly beady-eyed bastid. *sigh* Whether bu$hit hates Triana or not, the Truth will out, satellite or none. It may be too late by the time anyone does anything about it, but one way or the other the facts will get out there.

We have species dying by the hundreds every day due to loss of habitat and climate change, polar ice caps melting, permafrost melting, poor animals trying to cope (Polar bears in a Germany zoo in 104 degree temps, polar bears at the poles unable to get food because the ice is melting and they can't swim that far) and worldwide record high temperatures and overloaded power grids (in N. Cal the lines melted under the load!). Triana might be on ice, but the planet is heating up. I'm not sure the satellite shouldn't have been called Cassandra instead.

:grr:
