Duke Energy picks potential site in S.C. for new nuclear plant
Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Duke Power Co. and Southern Company have selected a site in Cherokee County, S.C., for a potential new nuclear power plant in one of the first orders for a new nuclear plant in the U.S. in more than 30 years, the companies said Thursday ... In January, Progress Energy said it will consider building a nuclear reactor at the Shearon Harris plant about 25 miles southwest of Raleigh. Progress Energy operates four nuclear reactors in Carolinas and Duke has three. http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1137834758664&path=!localnews&s=1037645509099

1. Duke Power picks Triad site for possible nuclear reactor
Although Duke Power Co. has chosen Gaffney, S.C., as the site for a proposed $6 billion nuclear plant, the company has also chosen a large tract of land in the Triad as a site for a potential reactor.

In an announcement Thursday, the Charlotte-based utility said that it will also consider a site in Davie County as a location for another potential future nuclear reactor.

The company will seek early site permit applications for the Davie County site, as well as another secondary site in Oconee County, S.C., which is next to an existing Duke nuclear plant.

The early permit application allows companies to do environmental and site suitability reviews, and obtain approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority before requesting a license to actually build and operate a nuclear plant. <snip>

3. Want to help stop the nuke industry?
There is a great group based out of Durham called the NC Waste Awareness and Reduction Network (NC WARN). Their website is www.ncwarn.org and highly recommend you check them out if you want to join the fight. Full Disclosure: I used to sit on their Board of Directors.
