I was rather shocked to see something like this in Jesse Helms land.

As someone who's moved to NC from KY in the last year, let me be the first to inform you that this state isn't NEARLY as conservative as one might expect. Granted I live in the Chapel Hill area, which is notoriously left-y for NC, but still...if I'd seen that billboard ANYWHERE in KY I would've fainted dead away. ;)

12. About NC liberals and Jesse

Where do you guys think Jesse got the idea everything that's wrong with the world is because of Liberals?

Here in NC, that's where! He won't tell you this, but when he was a young man, Jesse seethed with envy over this man:

Free and open education? War Hero? Columbia grad? President of UNC?

In the profile you see that Dr Graham was appointed to the Senate in 1949 to fill the void left by the death of Senator Broughton. What's not so common knowledge is that when Dr Graham tried to run for his own term in 1950, Jesse was on the opposition team. Yes, that's right. They tarred Dr. Graham with the the evil "C" word. And it damaged Dr. Graham's reputation grievously. I don't think he ever fully recovered from it. All the nastiness that Jesse has become known for and spread to acolytes like Lee Atwater and Karl Rove started in that 1950 race.

Jus think for a minute, what a vastly different view of NC politics the world would have if FPG had won that race back in 1950.

To those who say NC has no liberals, I say you don't know the half of it.

Their prices are high but it's a good place to find that missing fork from your setting. And they do have sales. They're still trying to find me a replacement for the sugar bowl I smashed last time I visited mom-in-law....

19. Equality NC has done a great job!

For all not familiar with Equality, their web page is http://www.equalitync.org

They do LOTS of things for equality, including lobbying, creating a statewide endorsement guide to educate voters on the positions of candidates for statewide elected offices...

Equality NC is a great organization. If you're at all inclined to donate to HRC this year, think about the work that really needs to be done in our own state... Every dollar helps an organization on a limited budget. (Ok, I'll stop with the NPR-style asking for dollars here. )

I was out in Wingate (union county) the other day for work and as I turned at the light I looked across the street and there sat this great big building that said "Jesse Helms American Enterprise center" Both the name and American Enterprise (because of institute) hit me at once and I thought I was gonna puke.

It's true there are so many rich conserves around here. Anyone been into Lake Park in Matthews? It's scary, I call it Stepford Hills.

Replacements is a great place. They also do tours! I was there on a slow night and I was the only one in the tour. If you have a little time, it is very interesting. Another interesting fact is they are a pet friendly place to work! (and I think for visitors as well!) All of their workers are allowed to bring their pets to work. I also think they hire a huge percentage of gay people! It is a very friendly and wonderful place. I know it sounds as if I work there, but I don't.

I have not seen that billboard yet but since I live in Greensboro, I will have to take the time to go see it. It is hard to believe it is out there until you see something like that. I guess I am a doubting Thomas at heart!!!
