Please don't be complacent, the opposition is ramping up!

This campaign is nearing the finish line, and the right-wing smear machine has shifted into high gear. Cecil Cantrell, Chris Peterson and their cohort have spent thousands of dollars—perhaps tens of thousands—to spread lies, distortions and half-truths about me via mailers and an insert in the IWANNA. (For more on these perps, check out Tebbe Davis' letter in the Asheville Citizen-Times.)

Today they added Gordon Smith to their target list.

There is no easy way to respond to such last minute sleaze, which is why the same small group of ultra-right ideologues have used the tactic repeatedly in recent decades. If anything, I find myself in good company, as they have vented their spew on others including U.S. Senate candidate Harvey Gantt (1990), U.S. Congressional candidate Maggie Lauterer (1994), and Council candidates including Brownie Newman (2001, 2003, 2007), Bryan Freeborn (2007) and Elaine Lite (2007).

The only effective response is to vote. Please get out to the polls this Tuesday if you didn't make it during early voting. Please urge three friends to vote.

By the way, we'll (hopefully) be celebrating on Tuesday night at Three Brothers Restaurant at the intersection of Montford Ave. and Haywood Rd., starting at 8 p.m. with music by Gas House Mouse (funky blues, soul and boogie music), great Greek food and election results as they are posted. (Bring your own nails to bite, since mine are all lined up to be busily chewed by yours truly.)
