Kryzan wins Democratic primary, defeating Davis and Powers in (NY) 26th Congressional District
Source: Buffalo News

Alice Kryzan won a come-from-behind victory tonight in the battle for the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 26th district, as party voters apparently turned their backs on two better-funded candidates -- Iraq War veteran Jonathan Powers and millionaire maverick Jack Davis -- who spent their money attacking each other.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting in six of the seven counties, Kryzan had 42 percent of the vote, or 9,063 ballots cast; followed by Powers at 36 percent, and Davis with 23 percent. It appears that Kryzan will face off against Republican businessman Christopher Lee in the race to replace retiring Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds, R-Clarence.

"I feel like the little engine who could," Kryzan, an Amherst environmental attorney, said before a crowd of supporters at her Williamsville headquarters.

Well, that was a surprise. I had a chance to meet privately with Jon for a half hour this summer, and found him an appealing candidate who would have been a strong shot to take the seat. Not sure how Alice will do.

1. How will she do? Put money on "not well."
To be blunt she won on the strength of one really well timed ad, and looking like the least tarnished candidate after Davis went on a smear campaign against Powers. She's got no campaign, no fundraising, and she spent a lot of time bashing the netroots, so they're not particularly likely to help her. Plus the phrase "millionaire environmental lawyer" is NOT going to go down well in this mostly rural district.

2. One ad and months of character assassinations by Davis
Davis' campaign strategy was to destroy Powers. And that's what he did. Kryzan flew under the radar and ran the ad. She didn't campaign -- at least not out in my area. Powers, on the other hand, covered the entire district
I was a Powers supporter and a fervent volunteer -- working 20 plus hours a week making phone calls and walking door to door across three of the four rural counties in the 26th. No one wants this district to go into the "D" column more than me. I think that Jon Powers was the only Democratic candidate that gave us any kind of chance. It's been a tough few days.
