A public sex sting at a New York state rest area off Interstate 684 has resulted in 20 men being charged in a month--including a Catholic priest.

A registered sex offender was also charged, according to an article posted yesterday by the Lower Hudson Online.

Among others, the operation also stung a Rotary Club president and a man of 72 years.

<snip>

The charge of forcible touching was brought against the Rev. Gary Mead, a Catholic priest who allegedly fondled an officer who was at the site in an undercover capacity. The article said that Mead was assigned to a Garnerville parish, St. Gregory Barbarigo.

BEDFORD - A sting aimed a men who cruise a rest area off Interstate 684 for gay sex resulted in charges against 20 men in the past month, including a Catholic priest and a registered sex offender.

<snip>

Mead, 44, was previously assigned to St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls and, in the late 1990s, was parochial vicar at Holy Family parish in New Rochelle. A message left yesterday with the Archdiocese of New York was not immediately returned.

Shawn M. Cromwell, 29, of Pleasant Valley, a Level 2 sex offender, was charged with public lewdness, loitering and trespass. He was convicted in 1997 of first-degree sexual abuse in Dutchess County involving a 9-year-old boy.

John M. Canzio, 47, of Bedford Hills, president of the Katonah Rotary Club, was charged with exposure, loitering and trespass. Canzio has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment.

19. It looks like ONE donated to the GOP. And they're in the military.
Apparently, it is against DU rules for me to post the details.

Garnerville parish reacts to priest's arrest on sex charge

GARNERVILLE - One of the most important things Elizabeth Luisi learned from the Rev. Gary Mead was that it is OK to be Catholic.

<snip>

"He's a wonderful man," she said. "He's a very genuine man that believes in God and believes our God is forgiving."

<snip>

Mead's arrest was not the first time a priest from St. Gregory's faced allegations of sexual misconduct.

In 1994, the archdiocese reached settlements with three Rockland County men who were abused during the early 1980s by Joseph Theisen, a former priest at St. Gregory's who was defrocked. Each man received $20,000 and promised not to talk publicly about what happened to them.

<snip>

Except for Mead, all of the suspects are married, police said. All 20 are due in Bedford Town Court tomorrow.

7. Clean 'em up
Sometimes you can hardly find an open stall to crap in, with all the other activities taking up the available porcelain.

Add in the delegations from St. Pedophilus' church, and it's a nightmare I tell ya.

10. I know that rest area well
Friends of mine lived in Putnam Lake, NY and when I lived in New Jersey I spent most weekends up there with them. I had to take 684 to get to their house and passed that rest area all the time. I even stopped there a few times, but since I'm female, I'm afraid that I didn't see what was happening in the, ah, other facilities, so to speak.

13. Sex sting
Seems to me if these folks want to avoid getting stung, they should just take the bird in hand and leave the bees alone.

18. Nineteen of the 20 men charged are married
from the article:

"...Nineteen of the 20 men charged are married, according to police. The priest was the exception..."

And who wants to bet that the majority were repuglicans?
