Battle is on to unseat Rep. King (NY-03)
BY ERIK GERMAN
Newsday Staff Writer

Nassau Legis. David Denenberg kicked off his run for Congress yesterday in the hometown of his opponent, attacking Rep. Peter King and President George W. Bush with equal measure -- hammering deficit spending, windfall oil profits, and high gas prices.

Denenberg (D-Merrick) delivered the mostly-extemporaneous speech on the grounds of Tackapausha Museum in Seaford to about 200 supporters.

"Before he goes to sleep every night, Peter King thanks God that George Bush is president," Denenberg said, referring to a sentence King wrote in a recent letter. "Ask him if he thanks God when he fills up his gas tank."

In an interview, King, a Republican, said his letter -- sent to a Democratic constituent who had criticized the congressman's support of Bush -- merely quoted former Democratic New York City Mayor Ed Koch's words to the same effect. In 2003, King attributed the same statement to Koch during an episode of the MSNBC talk show "Scarborough Country."

This is my district. Dave Denenberg is an outstanding candidate and would be the perfect congressman. We need to support Dave as much as possible against a right wing ideologue.

BTW, notice the end of the article where King runs from Bush.

1. I saw a Denenberg bumpersticker
in Long Beach last week. I tried to catch the guy, but I missed the light.

Here is his Nassau County website, http://www.davedenenberg.com/

5. Denenberg dropped out.
I was at a meeting tonight. He had some sudden health issue or something and he dropped out. We have no candidate.

Only two days after launching his congressional run, Nassau Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick) last night pulled the plug on his campaign against Republican Rep. Peter King, citing his inability to raise enough money and his need for a throat operation this summer.

Denenberg made the surprise announcement before nearly 60 members of the Bellmore-Merrick Democratic Club at Temple Beth Am in Merrick last night.

"It's a race that requires a 200 percent effort and at this point I'm afraid I don't have the ability to do that," he said prior to the meeting.

Denenberg told the audience he has polyps on his throat, which will require him to not speak for nearly a month. He added that the ailment is not serious but that surgery is needed.

2. Why such a late start?
Just askin'. He'll have some fundraising ground to make up. I'll donate to anyone in opposition to that POS King. (And I grew up in Merrick, so that's a plus for Denenberg).

3. The DNC is not particularly watching this race...
although I think they really should. I emailed Denenberg asking for a link to a campaign website, and told him I thought he might do some fruitful fundraising online.

If he contacts me I will also send him the clip of King talking about "we count the votes"....
(I have also volunteered to hand out paperwork.)

4. It's the Long Island way
Denenberg has been campaigning since January, but his official announcement was last week. It's pretty common around here because the primaries are so late. Dave is the man and any help would be great.
