to get people informed about the Patriot act and get them to sign petitions or even better-write letters to Congress to demand its repeal. Obviously with the current situation a band of merry liberals from Western NY won't get it done alone, but with a strong show from the area, and some exposure, it will get people thinking (which many have either forgotten to do or never learned to) and perhaps in other areas people will start making more productive noise about it too.

29. hmm yeah I could be interested in such a thing, what worries me is

that a band of merry liberals is ineffectual unless the band is large, in regards to an effort like this. Ive been in on some campaigns where there was great intentions and lots of honest hard work, but just to few people and resources to be effectively used in this manner.

I want to get very active now that the "mandate" is on, but I want to be a part of something that has effect. Obviously there are options to this (i.e. joining forces with already established area groups). If staying small (in terms of a WNY group founded from this forum), we could get to know eachother, figure out our combined strengths and weaknesses and use them to best effect either on our own or in terms of support for larger more established groups.

Geeze, does that make sense at all??? Im with you is what Im saying, but I really want solid input on terms of energy expendature versus actual effect.

That's what I thought. I've joined forces with the ACLU on this. I'm trying to set up an information meeting at a local community college to get the word out about the PA and how it violates the Bill of Rights, we're hoping for a date in April on that. What's been suggested to me is making the Patriot Act Repeal group-thing (whatever we're going to call it) a non-partisan effort. Apparently there are some Republicans out there who equally detest the PA. Truthfully, I haven't met any yet. I think the idea was that this project would have more political merit if it was a "we the people" thing.

That's a legendary place to me..it's where my dad grew up. I have heard many tales about how they caught so many lobsters that they fed it to the cat!

the cyclone. and my dad hated it so she would go on with the sailors back in the 40's. he would get so jealous. i loved the cyclone too. its still my favorite. there is no dip like it. straight down. scary as hell and a great rush.

they also had a parachute ride right up till the 60's, its still there, but it doesn't work. i haven't been there in awhile. used to love it.

everything is so crowded now. and such a hassle. used to be me and my sisters would take the trains (3) and go to the beach in the summer and sometimes hit Coney island for the rides back in the 60's and 70's. we were really young. well i was they were 10 years older then me. tee hee. lucky me!

I thought I posted on this thread, but I guess not. I'm very excited to see other Suffolk County residents on it, even one in Ronkonkoma. We're getting more Democratic in Suffolk all the time, which is great. It used to be a Republican stronghold but no more.

I've been attending meetings of the Islip Democratic Committee this year, figuring that it's time to really work within the system to defeat the GOP. It's been a great experience so far and I encourage anyone else in Islip to try it if you haven't so far.

Things got pretty vicious, this past weekend, in GD, and I've heard a lot of complaints, recently. And before Kerry was chosen, it did get pretty contentious, with all the candidate-bashing. But, for the most part, liberals are a pretty tolerant group. As you said, discussion and learning are great, as long as it doesn't degenerate into personal attacks.:-)

If you ever run into it, just hit "alert" and walk away, and you won't get sucked in. And in more than 9000 posts, I've only hit "alert" twice, and it was for very obvious Freeper disruptors, just here to stir things up.:shrug:

Rosendale is right in the middle of the County. We are famous for our cement, without which there could be no Brooklyn Bridge, no pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, fewer buildings in lower Manhattan, and fewer cement shoes. Also the Delaware and Hudson Canal went through here.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, moved to the Hudson Valley in '80. I have been involved in Democratic politics since I was a kid. Back in jr. high, a classmate and I organized to close down the school for the second moratorium against the Viet Nam war. I helped start SHAD, the organization that is responsible for making sure that the Shoreham nuke plant never opened. Currently, I am involved with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the Century House Historical Society, and the local Rosendale Democratic Party.

We are just off of Route 28--a 27 mile trek northwest from exit 19 off of I-87. Just 15 miles from Woodstock. It's a beautiful little place tucked away in the heart of the Catskills. The scales have just recently tipped toward a two-vote Democratic majority. This has always been Republican territory in the micro sense, but we are represented by Maurice Hinchey in Congress. It is very conservative and people do not like change. I moved here five years ago from a beach community in Marin County, California, that was beyond liberal. It has been a humbling experience. I no longer make many assumptions. Town Board meetings are truly amazing events. It is an environment that teaches patience.

Hello, I'm new here and this is my first post. A little about myself.

My girlfriend (29 yrs old) and I (31 yrs old) are both from the Capital Region (Albany, NY) area but we live in Delaware County at the moment so she can finish her Vet Tech degree at Suny Delhi. We are very much liberal in our views for the most part. We believe that stem cell research should be pursued and that gay marriage should be protected. It's not an issue of right or wrong but of responsiblity of a government to protect the rights of its people. Besides, I believe homosexuality is as much of a choice as being of any particular ethnic group. I am personally pro-life but I wouldn't pretend to have authority to decide for other people (nor should anyone else). Therefore I'm pro-choice in the larger scope of things. We believe America is in desperate need of health care reform. Living in Delaware County, some would be shocked to learn of the lack of decent physicians and mental health workers. Spitzers idea to create incentives for good MD's to come practice in upstate, rural and or poor communities is great. I hope that David Paterson pursues it.

Anyways, it's nice to be here, on a BBS that I know I won't have to put up with the b.s. of neo-cons and republicans alike.
