Warren Democrats file complaint
with Prosecutor over stolen Kerry signs

HACKETTSTOWN (Sept. 7, 2004) - The Warren County Democratic Committee filed a complaint today with the Warren County Prosecutor's Office after several John Kerry for President signs were stolen over the Labor Day Weekend.

According to Erik Anderson, Northwest New Jersey Regional Coordinator for Kerry, six private homeowners in Hackettstown reported that signs were taken from their front lawns.

It is against the law to take down political signs and certainly against the law to trespass on private property.

"It's unfortunate that some people feel that they have to resort to such actions," said Anderson. "We live in a Democratic society that allows for free speech and fosters differing views. It's disturbing that these people are trying to curb the rights of all Americans."

"I call on all citizens of Warren County, Republicans and Democrats alike, to denounce these criminal acts," added Roger Hines, Warren County Democratic Chairman. "There is no room in our society for intimidating tactics such as these."

Hines urges anyone who witnesses the stealing of political signs to contact the Prosecutor's Office immediately.

HACKETTSTOWN -- A half dozen John Kerry for President lawn signs disappeared over the Labor Day weekend, according to Democratic officials who filed a complaint with the Warren County Prosecutor's Office.

Hackettstown Mayor Roger Hines, who is also chairman of the Warren County Democratic Committee, said the signs disappeared from homes along Grand Avenue and Moore Street.

"I think they were taken in one swoop," Hines said. Townwide, Hines said he's seen about 10 "Kerry for President" signs.

Jim Simmons, who lives on Moore Street, noticed his Kerry/Edwards sign was missing Sunday morning when he and his family left for church.
