Poll finds Kerry, Bush virtually tied in Jersey
Poll finds Kerry, Bush virtually tied in Jersey

Published in the Courier News on July 29, 2004

TRENTON -- As the state's top Democrats gather in Boston to nominate John Kerry as the party's candidate, a poll indicates the Democratic challenger is in a virtual dead heat with President George W. Bush among New Jersey voters.

In Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind Poll released Wednesday, 45 percent of registered voters favor Kerry for president while 43 percent said they would vote for Bush. Ten percent were undecided.

Most Kerry supporters said they are voting Democratic as a way to cast a vote against Bush. Among Kerry voters, two-thirds said they are voting against the president, while one-third said they would be voting primarily to support the Massachusetts senator.

"John Kerry has been relying on George W. Bush to give people a reason to vote for the Democratic ticket," said Bruce Larson, survey analyst. "Kerry will solidify his position in New Jersey only when he gives voters a reason to vote for him rather than just against George Bush."

2. Yes
The state may be polling a bit closer than expected (though Rasmussen constantly has it up by 10pts or so) but I can't see a 16+ pt swing from last time.

4. Another reason to ignore polls
Some are right, some are wrong. None of them matter, especially on August 2.

5. FDU = Fairly riDiculous University
I went there for two years. I don't know abou their polling center, but their liberal arts programs, including poli sci, are definintely sub-par.

6. Re: FDU poll
I read a lot of polls and FDU's Public Mind is not a good one. For NJ statewide numbers that are trustworthy, look at Quinnipiac University and Rutgers-Eagleton/Star-Ledger polls. Those are the best. Rasmussen Reports is pretty decent.

7. Has anyone here ever participated in a Quinnipiac poll?
On Saturday morning, someone left me a phone message saying she was a representative from Quinnipiac who was conducting a survey, and she'd call back another time. She never did.

For once, I was disappointed that I missed a call from a survey taker!

Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 10:36 PM by Kire
....from some poll taker in Florida. Needlesss to say, I spared none of my wrath. I never heard of the results of the poll. They gave me a website which I forget now, but it must have been a private poll for a campaign or something.

*shrug*
