Hey, Jeb and Warren: Renounce Robertson!
http://www.politicsnh.com/press_releases/2005/August/8_...

(MANCHESTER) State Rep. Peter Sullivan today called upon Congressman Jeb Bradley and New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Warren Henderson to renounce statements made by Republican televangelist Pat Robertson calling for the assasination of the President of Venezuela.

"Pat Robertson is a foul blight on the American political landscape. His call for the assasination of Hugo Chavez is morally repugnant for a self-described clergyman, and diametrically opposed to the core values of the Christian faith", said Sullivan.

"Congressman Bradley and Chairman Henderson have a moral obligation to clearly and unambiguously renounce the lunacy of Pat Robertson. To allow his irresponsible remarks to go unchallenged is to tacitly condone their content."

"Hugo Chavez is a thug. There is no question about that reality. The challenge is dealing with him in a way that does not undermine American moral authority on the world stage. We should confront Chavez with the full range of diplomatic, political and economic options available to us. We must not allow ourselves to stoop to his level by condoning absurd options such as those proposed by Pat Robertson", concluded Sullivan.

1. Right on with Robertson but...
Its unfortunate that he distracts from the kickass part of his statement by ending with "Hugo Chavez is a thug."
That "thug" has just offered cheap gas and healthcare for poor Americans and he has more support in the US than the shrub does. Im a big fan of Peter, and I live in NH1, but what was he thinking in saying something like that?!

I guess Peter should see these:

2. My explanation

It's Peter himself posting this time...

Few political figures live up to the caricatures. There are often varying shades of gray. This is the case with Chavez. He was democratically elected, and there has been progress on the socio-economic front. But Chavez is not a warm and cuddly democrat. He has a nasty record on human rights issues, as Amnesty International points out in this reasonably balanced report:

http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGAMR530052004?open&of=ENG-VEN

Human rights abuses are wrong, whether they are perpetrated by the left or the right. Growing up in the 1980s, it drove me nuts to see the Reaganites make excuses for abuses carried out by governments from the right side of the political fence. Let's not fall into that same trap. There's no room for favoritism when it comes to standing against torture.

3. renouncing ain't enough
Robertson should be brought up on criminal charges! It's illegal to threaten to assasinate and/or kidnap anyone. We should be calling on our leaders to enforce the law in Robertson's case.

Stick that under the nose of the New Hampshire congressional delegation.
