So What Do You New Hampshirites Think Of Senator Bayh?
I find myself at odds with him on a few issues, but I think is a very likeable and personable man. I stayed up past midnight to watch him in Manchester, NH on C-SPAN and I really liked the answers he gave and the way that he presented them. He seemed to really connect with the people inside the Manchester Dem Headquarters very well.

Was anyone on DU at the meeting or dinner by chance? I have an hint that the elderly lady who asked the question about election reform and Diebold is a DUer. She had a very good question that she laid out eloquently. Maybe it's just me, but she sounded like a good ol DUer. Meg was her name possibly?

Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN)

1. How did Bayh respond to her question? Does he know machines are owned by
Republicans and controlled by their operatives?

4. The Lady
said that the last two elections were stolen. She did not know the name of the company, but knew of all it's dirty tricks. She asked him the name-- and he replied, "Oh yeah, the Diebold brothers." He seemed well aware of what Diebold was, but said that the past election was not stolen from John Kerry. He said there were some "problems" with the voting machines, but didn't think they translated into a Kerry victory. He then went on to say that he supported election reform legislation, but he didn't go into any details.

2. Bayh wishes to pursue immensely damaging corporatist economic policies
I cannot give him my support.

He's welcome to run in the primaries, but I'm almost certain I wouldn't vote for him in the general if he won the nomination.

3. I started watching him on C-SPAN...in fact two different times
but I turned him off after awhile. He seemed to talk too fast and in a monatone...no expression. I tried listening to some of the repeat and again just couldn't get interested. He did seem a little more personable but just didn't do anything for me. I didn't know anything about him and tried to listen. Maybe I'm just too prejudice
to give him a fair accounting.

5. I like the guy
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 07:16 PM by FightinNewDem
I was actually standing next to the person with the WKXL microphone. If you saw the piece on C-Span, I'm the guy who puts Bayh on the phone with his wife.

I like Evan Bayh. His work on national service has been superb. While Bush talks about patriotism and honor, Sen. Bayh has dilligently worked to expand funding for AmeriCorps, and to restore national service positions lost to Bush budget "priorities".

That said, there's a lot of ground to cover before 2008, and I like a number of the potential candidates, such as Biden, Warner, Clinton, Clark and Richardson.

By the way, the elderly woman is May Gruber, a wealthy progressive from Manchester's north end.

The Diebold flap really doesn't resonate too strongly in NH. NH actually has a paper trail, since votes are cast using either a traditional paper ballot or an optical scan ballot. Recounts from last year's elections showed no discernible discrepancy between the hand count and the electronic tabulation.

6. Awesome
I did see the telephone conversation.

And you tell Mrs. Gruber that a 17 year old in south Alabama stayed up until midnight to see Senator Bayh and that I really admire her for asking that question about voting problems.

Keep fighting, friend.

7. sorry
Mr. Bayh is in favor of making my reproductive choices for me. I will not support him, or any other man who feels annoited to do the same.

8. You Must Be Referring To His Vote On D&X?
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 02:42 PM by BamaLefty
If so, I know what you mean... and I agree with you.

He voted with NARAL 100% last year though. I'm not trying to defend the guy... just sayin.

9. to be honest
I'm mistrustful of DLC Dems.

Bayh voted for DOMA.

Bayh voted for the odious "Partial Birth Abortion" crap. There is no such thing, and the Democrats were wrong to give it credence.

He voted for the bankruptcy bill.

I have issues with all of that. I don't care if he's anti-choice as long as he shuts up about it, and doesn't try to legislate his view.
