1. About the school
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 01:52 PM by PinkTiger

It is an OK school; the main problem is, some people can't adjust. It seems to be predominately white. Not a lot of individual freedom. Heavy Republican bias. Very conservative. There have been several articles on it, mostly because students can work off all fees, and if they work in the summer, can pay for room and board as well.
But it isn't the "normal" college experience. Your student will need to think carefully about priorities.

4. Thanks for the info.
Leaving college without enormous debt is a big appeal.

She's pretty much a freethinker but nonjudgmental. She could probably get along with the people. Especially if there are any liberal places nearby.

Something to chew on. She's still a junior.

Thanks again.

12. No liberal place nearby.
You are more or less marooned on right wing Island. She needs to go visit first and really see.
She will be hanging around with fundies for four years.
And drinking Kool-Aid.....

14. Don't go there.
You'll be sorry. Lots of negatives about that place.

2. It is in an absolutely beautiful part of MO
It's also very Christian. Don't know if that's what your daughter had in mind for college.

5. She definitely doesn't like the Christian slant.
But I think she likes the idea of a 20 year relationship with a bank over loans even less.

Thanks for telling me about the scenery. She does like outdoor things.

13. Nawwww, I don't think so....

I bet if you took a hundred of them, at random, and hypo-ed steroids straight into their frontal lobes (assuming that the predictable Darwinian atrophy of their Fundamentalist frontal lobes hasn't already taken place), that they would simply lie down like little kitties and go to sleep.

Seriously, if scientists ever isolate the chemical that drives these loonies to juggle snakes and scream unintelligible "prophesy" in instantly invented tongues of their own creation, we will truly know what a "weapon of mass destruction" is.

My God, be kind to your daughter!

Send her to Tikrit or Fallujah where she will have, at the least, a fighting chance.:sarcasm:

16. When I was a senior in high school
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 12:41 AM by xmas74
I applied and was accepted. I decided not to go because of the rather strict rules that were in place at that time.

In the early 90's you had to attend church services-of the school's choosing-nearly every Sunday. If you missed more than a few you could be suspended for the rest of the semester. This actually happened to someone from my high school.

They did random room checks. If you had pictures/posters displayed that did not meet with their approval (such as rock bands, unapproved political candidates, etc) you could be suspended. I know someone who transferred to my college for this reason. Turns out CoO hated Bon Jovi. :)

Another high school classmate (I didn't like her but thought that she was wronged) was expelled because she became pregnant during the semester. It goes against a morality contract that you used to be required to sign with the school. She said that she knew of another girl who was expelled because birth control pills were found in her room during a random check. The pills were prescribed for endometriosis but she was still expelled.

Cheap schools in Missouri? UCM is pretty cheap http://www.ucmo.edu/
It's the third largest state school in MO, there are quite a few clubs on campus to join and a nice international department so we have some culture. We have Whiteman AFB nearby so hopefully she can get a job there. Of course, if she can get a job with the school itself she'll get one semester of classes paid for every year-a benefit for working for the school.

Another inexpensive school in MO is the one I attended: http://www.moval.edu/
It's an average sort of place-nothing fancy. The nice thing is that nearly 90% at the school are in a work study of some sort. They also recruit heavily from out of state and they work with both the parents and students to make the final bill as low as possible. Their goal is supposed to be that of making college as affordable as possible for all and to that extent they will personally look for every scholarship and grant available for the student.

(Oh, wanted to add that the girls all used to live in MacDonald Hall at Valley. I lived on the third floor in room 310-supposedly the really haunted room. And the place they now call Ashford Women's Honors used to be Alpha Xi Delta sorority, which I was a member. The pictures really take me back!)

(But then, I've been spending way too much time in GDP.}

18. The only thing I know about it is the museum
which is probably not helpful. But if you go there to look over the campus, check it out. When I was there (circa 1979) (not as a student) they had the original Beverly Hillbilly's truck. I don't remember what else was there, but do recall it was worth going into.
