This is the website of Citizens Against Higher Taxes, a campaign foundation by Andrew Kaiser and his friend and business partner, Jeremiath Gettle. As you probably know, Gettle is the executive of Baker Creek Seed Co., and a strong political supporter of the farm family, and opponent of the ongoing war in Iraq.
As one of the candidates says, “We’re being taxed to the max.” The average American works 5 months out of the year just to pay his or her taxes. Now a proposition being promoted in Wright County seeks to add an extra $1400-per-person-per-year tax in order to pave some roads, and fix up some parts of the courthouse (which many say does not even need to be fixed).
For those who are sensitive to dust, or expectant mothers who don’t fancy a dose of the Old-Time Ozarks Oxytocic when driving to or from the farm, the prospect of paved roads might sound attractive. However, the roads as they are serve most folk just fine; paving them would not only cost money but it would increase springtime slip-off-the-road accidents (blacktop is slipperier than gravel after a rain), and blacktop asphalt even contributes to global warming (Solomon et al., 1996.) Furthermore, most of the well-travelled roads are already paved; the ones to be paved by the new money would be roads that only serve a small number of motorists. Yet all of Wright County’s citizens must bear the burden of paying for it.
So vote against higher taxes on November 6. More taxes are the last thing we need.
