Defeating Jim Talent is a must!
Even though I'm from Wisconsin, I really want to see you guys get rid of that nerdy pipsqueak. He has become the Eddie Haskell of the U.S. Senate, and is obviously posturing for a leadership role once Frist retires.

I'm afraid that if Missouri doesn't get rid of him now, he'll be a "Senator for life."

Who is the best person to run against him?

Joe Maxwell
Robin Carnahan
Jay Nixon
Claire McCaskill
Bekki Cook
Nancy Farmer
someone who else who I don't know about?

Who are the best candidates to go up against Talent, in rank order of electability?

1. Carnahan or McCaskill
Nixon has enemies in KC and St. Louis due to his opposition to deseg suits when he was state AG. And you can't win the state without the two largest cities behind you.

Would that hurt her chances of defeating Talent?

18. "Is it true that Robin Carnahan..."
I just ran across this post as I moved back in time (trying to find Harry Truman, circa 1948) and...

My Answer Is: "I've no bloody idea". That said...

It brings to mind a question a correspondent asked when I determined on 3-28-2005 that our SoS was determined to make voting in Missouri by
V.V.P.A.T machines, under the following conditions (as of that day).

1) MO. had no vendor in mind ("We'll invite them in")
2) No deadline ("but before 1-1-2006")
3) But "machine would be I.T.A. approved".
4) And "Would be HAVA compliant" by 1-1-2006.

In response to that info, my correspondent asked "WHAT!!???!!. That means she either has to be Clueless, Complicit or Compromised!!"

So perhaps it is *compromised*, after all.

How can she be so clueless as to not know that Mark F. "Thor" Hearne,

A) Dissed her recently deceased father by saying in 2000 that it would be illegal for Roger Wilson to appoint Jean Carnahan to the Senate if Mel Carnahan beat John Ashcroft because "as of 11-7-2000, Mel Carnahan is no longer a 'person' or a resident of Missouri" (creating a perfect strategy IMHO, BTW, for 100 GOP Senators in DC. Just have all opponents "Paul Wellstoned" right before an election...!).

B) Represented the GOP Bush-Cheney team (along with "Crazy John" Bolton) in Florida in 2000 as a premier "chad checker", among other duties.

C) Was General Counsel for the Bush-Cheney 2004 ticket.

D) Was Matt Blunt's chief legal counsel during his term as SoS.

E) Still sits prominently on the Election Advisory Committee even as of *today!*

F) Is closely associated with Adkins and Sons of Clinton, MO, chief vendors of Diebold Equipment in Missouri that showed up, in use, in Pettis and Jefferson Counties in the 4-5-2005 elections.

and, finally,

G) Has testified as a non-partisan "general counsel" for AC4VR.com, on 3-21-2005 in front of US Rep. Bob Ney's (R-OH) committee to investigate voter fraud in Ohio, in which he presented a 41 page report detailing massive fraud by Democrats!!

And ACVR.com was created on 3-17-2005 by Texan Bobby Eberle and shares space with his "GOPUSA" and "TALON NEWS", famous for reporters/male prostitutes like "Jeff Gannon".

Additionally, after being run to ground by BradBlog, Rep. John Conyers and others, "Thor" was *still* appointed to one of the Jimmy Carter-James Baker Blue Ribbon advisory panels.

Can Robin Carnahan be unaware of this guy's activities? Obviously not!

So if she is proud of this Missouri "Home Boy" on the SoS HAVA advisory staff, why is it not trumpeted all over the SoS.mo.gov page??
If she is not proud of him, why is it that she has not made sure to get rid of him . I mean, even "Jeff Gannon" lost his White House "daily press" credentials!

I think it is time we heard from her, or someone, on this. If she is not "clueless", that leaves complicit and compromised.

And IMHO, if she is gay, then that is the "compromising position" that she will see come home to roost in 2008 when Matt Blunt in Missouri, and Congress (having used the nuclear option) install their Theocratic State. If true, she could find herself tied to a stake in front of the Capitol, to be stoned to death.

I hate the thought of this *so* much that I am almost wishing for a case of simple corruption. You know, greased palms and all? Just complicit! Or even just "non compos mentis"... dropped on her head as a baby, or something... but I fear the worst.

Otherwise why is this "worst of the worst" GOP hack still hanging around? There just has to be a reason. And I, for one, want to know what it is! And that is just for starters.

Maxwell has an "it" factor that beats all of them.
He's incredibly charismatic! He's also a great populist who speaks the rural language. He has the ability to court the rural voters we need so badly.

9. Nixon's NOT the one
I'd love to see Nancy Farmer run again, but since she was just defeated by Kit Bond I doubt if she'll jump back into a race for the other Senate seat from Missouri.

Claire would be an excellent choice, but I'm hoping she'll run against Matt "Skippy" Blunt again in four years after he's make a complete mess of things.

Robin Carnahan is impressive, but I think she needs another term or two in office before she tries for a U.S. Senate seat.

About the only person on your list I absolutely could not support is Jay Nixon, a DINO (Democrat in name only) who is a racist and homophobic bigot. It's little wonder that he does well in the Repugnantcan rural areas of the state. Those people are capable of recognizing one of their own even if he calls himself a Democrat.

She ran a horrible campaign for Governor. If she can't win Governor against dumbo Matt Blunt, she can't beat Jim Talent for his Senate seat. Have her stick to auditing.

11. I respectfully disagree
I think McCaskill ran a good campaign. I also think we had the same situation here in MO that they had in Ohio. The SOS was also the chair of the state bush campaign. And he was running for governor.

Blunt has already started out with a bang. He will probably be the worst gov MO has ever had, or maybe tie for worse with Asscroft. The citizens will be ready for a change in 4 years.

12. To hell with McCaskill
Claire McCaskill DID run a lousy campaign. She lost and followed that up by whining relentlessly to the Post Dispatch political writer that it was the DNC's fault she lost. Claire blamed her defeat on the DNC and Kerry campaign pulling out of Missouri.

The simple fact is, she came off horribly in the debates against a weak opponent. Her campaign accepting loans from her husband, who owns several nursing homes was a disaster. In fact, her husbands nursing homes were cited by the state for violations of various regulations.

Living in a community with a large elderly population, I received a phone call from the Blunt campaign which hit on Claire's nursing home problem. Those recorded calls were very tough and probably scared the hell out of thousands of elderly voters.

Furthermore, John Corzine asked Claire to run for the US Senate against Kit Bond. She declined and ran for governor instead. She wasn't there for the party when we needed her and I'm not interested in throwing away an opportunity to unseat Jim Talent.

MEMO TO THE MISSOURI DEMOCRATIC PARTY:

FIND A LEGITIMATE CANDIDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sick and fucking tired of losing senatorial elections in this state. The Carnahan victory was based on sympathy and everyone knew by election day that there would be another election in 2002 anyway. Missouri has not elected a democrat to a FULL SIX YEAR TERM in the United States Senate since Thomas F. Eagleton. That is an embarrassment in my opinion. Jay Nixon has already stated that he intends to run for governor in '08. McCaskill is not a viable option and Sec Of State Carnahan has no credibility yet. The only credible options are Joe Maxwell and Roger Wilson. If neither one of them will run, we are going to end up with another ridiculous nominee like Nancy Farmer.

13. Can we think
of anyone else? Maybe there is someone out there, only involved in local politics, that might make an excellent candidate. I am sick and tired of looking at Bond and cannot stand Talent. I wrote a letter to his offices and I received a reply-in the mail-stating that they cannot address my complaint because (and I am slightly paraphrasing) they only have time to address constituents. Of course, the letter was mailed to Warrensburg, where I live. The most idiotic waste of taxpayer money that I have witnessed, personally, in a long time.

State Blunt made a ruling that the people who were going out to register voters were not obligated by law to turn in voter cards for anyone whose political ideology was offensive to them.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/politics/10005000.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp

So "there's the potential that lots of people who think they're registered voters are going to find out that the registering agent did not properly submit their paperwork," said Secretary of State Matt Blunt...

...When it comes to private voter registration groups, Blunt said he's not sure there can - or should - be a law compelling them to turn in every registration card they collect. He gives this hypothetical example: What if a Ku Klux Klan member wants to register to vote through an African-American group conducting a voter drive?

"I don't believe an organization striving for racial equality should be compelled to register voters who are exactly opposed," Blunt said.

or

Missouri law does not require people who conduct voter registration drives to turn the registration cards into election officials.

This seems to us to be an oversight in state law that ought to be fixed. Secretary of State Matt Blunt disagrees.

He told the Associated Press there shouldn't be a law compelling private groups to turn in the cards. He mused: What if a Ku Klux Klan member wants to register to vote through an African-American group conducting a registration drive? "I don't believe an organization striving for racial equality should be compelled to register voters who are exactly opposed," he said.

14. MO. House and Senate
We should be more worried about getting back the General Assembly and the State Senate. I know the U.S. Senate race is more "sexy", but its imperative that we put our energies towards regaining at least one of the state houses.

15. huge minority in both chambers
It will probobly take three cycles to get caught up in the senate. With senate terms being four years and the GOP holding more than double the seats we hold, this is not going to happen overnight. The house saw us gain one seat in '04. So in essence, that will most likely take at least two cycles, or one incredible performance. Either way, why ignore this senate race?

I'm beyond fed up with Jim Talent and Kit Bond representing this state. Is the Missouri Democratic Party so pathetic that it can't find ONE credible candidate capable of winning this race? Missouri hasn't sent a democrat to the United States Senate for a full six year term since 1980. I was two years old at that time and I'd like to see it happen again before I have my own children.

24. Graham eyes Talent’s seat: Other Democratic leaders met Tuesday to discuss
Democratic state Sen. Chuck Graham, a symbolic leader of stem-cell research supporters, said he will probably challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, who has endorsed legislation to criminalize a certain kind of stem-cell research. Graham, D-Columbia, who would be his party’s first candidate for the 2006 Senate race, is paralyzed from injuries he suffered in a car accident while a teenager and has helped lead the effort against Missouri legislation that would ban a type of stem-cell research commonly known as therapeutic cloning. Talent is a co-sponsor of federal legislation introduced last month by Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., that also would make the practice illegal, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a civil fine of at least $1 million. Read More
