A Recap of the "No New Tax" Rally today at the Capitol
from an email from www.parentsunitednetwork.org
This is guaranteed to piss you off. The Repugs are getting desperate. Gov. Pawlenty called for the rally. Only 100 supporters showed up on a bright and warm day. (snicker)

This morning at the Capitol

This morning at the Capitol the Minnesota Taxpayers League held a rally. About 100 people rallied for No New Taxes and about 30 folks that the speakers called “from the other side” were there to show support for increased revenues for Housing, Health Care and Education.

The event began with Jason Lewis, from North Carolina, encouraging Minnesotans to hold the line on taxes. David Strom. President of the Minnesota Taxpayer’s League, spoke next and explained that on April 2, Gov Pawlenty called him and said, “We need a rally--how about on Tax Day at 8AM?” Even though Mr. Strom thought that was short notice, he pulled it together. It may have been helpful that the state Republican Party distributed the emails. It might also explain why so many signs read, “Pawlenty-06”

When Mr Lewis returned to the podium it was to recognize a woman in the crowd who was holding a sign that said, “When did we stop seeing kids and start seeing tax burdens.” To that Mr. Lewis shouted—“And where do you get the right to take the food from my child to give to yours!” Often throughout the event those who held differing opinions from the No Tax Pledge people, were told to “get a job” and “get off welfare”. Those were interesting statements to the doctor in front of me—and the high school students who were holding signs that read, “Fees are Taxes” “Stop the Lies”.

Again Mr. Lewis returned to the podium and this time remarked to a person in the audience who held a sign saying “Willing to pay more for a better Minnesota”--“yeah—you mean you want to take my money to pay for a better Minnesota!” Does Mr. Lewis still pay tax in Minnesota—does anyone know?

He then called upon all of the non-profits in the group to “give some of all that money to the hard working folks here!” I didn’t see any non-profit groups represented in the crowd. He also congratulated the crowd for getting to the Capitol all on their own—not using any “government paid for buses. ” I suppose that was an oblique reference to the February Education Rally of oh, 6000- 8000 people.

When a gentleman came over to read my sign, which was pro education, he told me to “get the communists out of our schools.” I heard other parents there called socialists and communists.

Govenor Pawlenty was part of this amazing line up of speakers, as was Sen Gaither (R Plymouth), Speaker Sviggum and Ron Ebensteiner (Chair of the State GOP) and Congressman Kennedy. They all encouraged the rally participants to call their legislators and make sure they got the message that taxes were not to be raised.

The denouement of the event was when Mr. Strom invited all of the Republicans who are looking for the Republican endorsement for the 6th congressional seat to come forward to sign large facsimiles of the No Tax Pledge. Among others, Rep. Jim Knoblach, former Education Commissioner Cheri Pierson Yecke and Sen Michele Bachmann did just that. Some of you might remember that last week, Sen Bachmann had a hearing on her bill to fund schools. In that bill, she took all of the dollars that the Governor had in his budget and placed them on the per pupil formula. The revenue source for those dollars was local tax levies. Maybe if it’s local—it’s not a tax?

All in all the morning was quite eye opening. The anger of the crowd was reminiscent of the Civil Rights era. This writer thought we were finished with that level of hateful division.

1. Mark My Words
Republicans will wish they never voted for this administration and went rough shod all over the poor and middleclass.

2. Their arguments just don't hold water anymore
For years Minnesotans have been saying 'raise our taxes' in order to have good services.

I don't know how they can be so abusive to all the professionals, rich, middle class and working poor who want to provide services for all and are willing to pay for them.

Their only comeback seems to be snide remarks. Totally inappropriate.

3. 91% top tax rate, Truman. Today, a pathetic 35%
Or, put it this way

taxes are a third what they should be, at the top.

why? Reaganomics.

wages are lower now than when reaganomics began.. adjusted for inflation.

reaganomics is a flop. Toss it.

4. And it's not only individual income taxes
Our corporate tax rates are about the lowest they have ever been. In some cases 1.5, 2, and 3% for our largest corporations.

That's ridiculous!

"budget is tight, so the only solution is to cut services."

Never have i heard tv mention the obvious solution

get out of this hole by backtracking how we got into it == reverse the taxcuts for the rich.

--- return to the sensible tax structure of Truman's administration.

6. I find it amazing how the rich can just walk past the homeless,
the sick and the hungry on their way to their limos and luxurious condos on the beach.

I guess in some parts of the country it's easy to isolate themselves so they never see the extremes of wealth and poverty in America.

What DO they have on their minds that is such a priority? The next business conquest? Their next expensive meal at a trendy restaurant? Where to buy a pair of $400 shoes? Which vacation resort is next on the list?

I just don't get it.

We have to take back the power and start taking care of our own again.

8. Oh, they see the extremes of poverty
they just assume if you're poor, you did did something to deserve it and God is punishing you. I actually heard one "good Christian" claim that we didn't need more antipoverty programs because Jesus said the poor would always be with us so the programs won't do any good. :banghead:

What I really hate is the people (Yuppie scum, I call them) who moved to Minnesota from other states for MN's great quality of life and then whine about having to pay taxes to maintain that quality.

10. the ignorance and lack of compassion still shock me
but I am a firm believer in "what goes around, comes around."

Those yuppie scum just about ruined Minnesota. Maybe they'll migrate to the few eastern states that still fund their schools and other services.

17. Then, and I almost say this sarcastically,
the programs that benefit THEM should be eliminated. They won't like it here once their special treatment goes bye-bye.

We gave STATE FARM special treatment which convinced them to come here (1994 they came because the government gave them a no-tax initiative). Once the free ride ended 10 years later and now they're treated like every other company, they're already packing up to leave.

To Nebraska.

At least it's still in the US, but this is what we get. No loyalty. It's all about money and the lowest price. That is what our youth is being taught and the cycle will only worsen. Devolution. It's disgusting.

7. Jason Lewis is a maggot

on the Pilonidal Cyst on Limbaugh's butt.

note: A Pilonidal Cyst is basically an abscess of pus and hair beneath the outer skin.

Additional note: Limbaugh's butt is significantly larger than this one.

Another additional note: Thanks for the report, katinmn. I absolutely detest Jason Lewis. He personifies everything I hate about the Conservative Doctrine & the Republican Party.

11. He used to broadcast daily in the evenings...
..on our local Hate Radio station...WCCO 1500AM. He moved a couple of years ago, and the air quality here has improved since he left.

He kept screaming about wanting to keep his money and the minorities and Welfare people that were screwing up the country for REAL Americans. Criticizing the republicans was an act of treason!
