4. What are her realistic chances?
She is popular in her district and I expect her district would elect another DFLer if she would choose to run for Senate.

It is outstate/suburbs that you have to worry about. Is she viewed as too much of a "radical"? Because that is the label she would be attached with.

Can her stances overcome the slime?

7. Nothing we can see
but I am trying to guess they type of anti-DFL "marketing slogans" the GOP will toss out. You KNOW it is in their playbook and it WILL be coming as something along those line.

Any 2006 campaign HAS to be planned expecting the usual trash and find a way to turn that to their advantages. It has to be proactive to the known attacks. Remember, the GOP playbook is to make precieved advantages into disavantages.

I like Betty, and would vote for her, but things have to be planned with a stratigic thought in mind (and I am well aware what GOPers probably read DU).

10. A Good Choice
She's a real, fighting Democrat. Let's run Betty for Senate, Wetterling for CD6.

Since CD4 is safe blue, we should have no problem recruiting a top-shelf candidate to take Betty's place.

If we pull off all these victories, we'll have a great Democratic Senator, two great new Democratic Representatives, and we'll get rid of Mark Kennedy. What fun that would be.

12. A brief background on Betty's views
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 11:05 PM by Dickie Flatt
If you are a MINNESOTAN, please contact McCollum and urge her to run for Senate in 2006. For those unfamiliar with the circumstances of the race, incumbant Democrat Mark Dayton has dropped out. The 2006 race will be for an open seat, one that we must keep. Betty McCollum has a great chance to win the seat and represent our Democratic values in the Senate.

During her time in the House, Betty has one of the best records of any Democrat. She voted against the war. She consistently receives perfect ratings from pro-choice groups (and perfect zeroes from the anti-choice lobby). She voted against the Hate Amendment and receives superb ratings from the Human Rights Campaign. She is committed to protecting the environment; she has a perfect pro-environment record from the Sierra Club. She is a strong labor supporter.

If you are a progressive Democrat, Betty McCollum is your candidate.

18. McCollum is a liberal, anti-war, pro-choice Catholic
Kennedy is a conservative, pro-war, anti-choice Catholic.

That could get very ugly, especially with Rove's hand in it.
Reminding us of how some US Bishops so eagerly signed on as Bush hitmen in the presidential race.

23. She didn't support the Congressional Black Caucus....
and John Conyers on the voter fraud issue, did she? That would probably work in her favor in a Senate run, however, I found it very disappointing.

24. No she didn't.
I was disappointed too, though not particularly surprised.

My biggest question is, would she be able to raise the 10-20 million necessary to defeat a GOP opponent?

She has a safe seat, is a protege of Pelosi and is going places fast in the House. Why would she want to risk that for an iffy Senate seat, especially if it requires raising phenomenal cash.

25. My thoughts exactly-- the Senate would be a step down for her
She got a high-ranking position on the DCCC, she's in a safe seat, she's a regional whip, she's on the fast track.

It's doubtful she would give all this up for something as risky as an expensive run for US Senate.

27. It's not her money at stake. She would attract support from
thousands of Minnesota progressives.

I'd do more donating and fundraising for her than someone I've never heard of.
