Anyone in the twin city area know this radio station, KSTP?
1500 am, they were sponsoring the diary of one of the prison guards Joe Ryan, I think. What is there political bent? Let me guess, Limbaugh from noon to three.

1. You got it.
Conservative talk, mostly.

2. Owned by Stanley Hubbard, who also owns an FM station and 2 TV stations
Hubbard's an old-time Republican from way back. Although technically Hubbard Media is a small "independent" company, the station has a pronounced conservative bent in its news coverage, and tends to be a little sensationalistic, IMHO. At least it's not FOX, I guess.

AM 1500 is right-wing talk radio, but once had Jim Hightower's show on in the afternoons. Also, I believe the prison guard requested that KSTP pull his diary from its web site, after the "scandal" came to light. IT was pulled down a week or so ago, IIRC.

Hubbard also owns KS95, an FM MOR radio station; KSTP-TV, Mpls/St. Paul's ABC affiliate, and KSTC-TV, a UHF station known mostly for cheezy reruns and bad movies.

5. They pulled Hightower's show almost the minute they put it on.
They also put Hightower on at extremely bad times for listenership, like early Sunday mornings. AM 1500 is a joke.

Oh, and Hubbard may be an old Republican--well, he's a Republican, and he's old, that's for sure--but he's hugely reactionary in his politics and it shows in everything his little empire is about. He's a total cheapskate, too--they rerun the morning show in the evening on KS95 just so they can pop in a tape and not pay anyone for several hours each night. It's bizarre to hear; the announcers will be talking about how it's 7:30 AM, traffic is piled up on 494, etc.

9. They also own another FM station

107.1, which is female-oriented talk.

Not that anyone is noticing. The ratings are almost non-existant.

They also run Dr. Laura.

Maybe that's one of the reasons why.

And 1500 was at it's best in the early '90's, when they had Bob Yates, Don Vogel, Turi Ryder, Barbara Carlson, and Soucheray did strictly sports talk. It was a pretty fun station to listen to, almost like the old WLUP-AM in Chicago (in their prime). Now it's a mere shadow of itself, yet another GOP propaganda station.

10. 107.1, huh?
I'll have to keep that in mind. I only listed to three or for FM stations these days (KFAI, KNOW and Kool 108 are my main ones), just because corporate-dictated formats rule most of the airwaves nowdays (gee, will KQRS play "Start Me Up" by the Stones today????).

I agree about 1500 though. It's past its prime. But maybe that's a good sign of things to come....!

6. Lewis was a total scumbag.
He was known for hanging up on guests--not just callers. I heard it myself. He was also totally and completely out of touch with reality, an Ayn Rand groupie of the highest order. Government bad, private sector good. It was just like "Animal Farm" with that guy. I remember trying to talk some sense into him a couple times, based on stuff that I saw at the U of M, like the birth of the Internet. How we'd still be talking to each other with coffee cans and string if there wasn't public sector money in computers, etc. And how transistors and Unix came out of the AT&T monopoly. He just refused to get it.

8. Soucheray - biggest whiner ever?
Joe sure likes to spend a lot of time talking about the "victim mentality", but then he spends nearly all of his air time bithcing and moaning about how tough is to be an upper-class white guy. Poor baby.

13. why do people like Soucheray
His show sounds exactly like what you hear in a small town cafe anywhere in the midwest.

7. NOT an employee-friendly business
I know a few people who've had the misfortune to be employees under contract to the Hubbard Broadcasting Gulag- they've reported pretty miserable experiences. The bad new is that Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. is the biggest "independent" media company in town.

12. If you are hopelessly bored,
tune in KSTP 1500AM between 10AM & NOON on weekdays. One of the 3 hosts, Ron Rosenbaum, is worthwhile sometimes. More of a libertarian than a NeoCon. Supports the Constitution over bush*s imperial presidency. This station caters to the ignorant (flush's audience) who tend to call in during Rosenbaum's time slot shouting NeoCon talking points. Rosembaum does a good job of confronting ignorance and lock step talking points.
