"ST. PAUL, Minn. - Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer says Minnesota should factor tips into the hourly pay for minimum wage workers in restaurants and other gratuity-based jobs."

3. Clearly he does not care about his voting base
As all the workers he is mentioning do not earn very much to begin with. There is playing to his base and playing to his base. On the Strib comment section there have been many Republicans speaking out on this as going too far.

Too many people have worked in restaurants at some point in their lives.

some of these people make upwards of $100,000 a year. What an idiot. So out of touch with reality. Following the Bachmann and Palin example of making shit/realities up as he goes along.
Yup! Emmer wants to TAX all the last menial labor jobs to the hilt.

6. He's about the like the senators who refuse to pass unemployment extensions
There are five unemployed persons for every one job and the Senate will not pass an unemployment extension bill. The Democrats try to blame the mess solely on the Republicans but, of course, a lot of the Dems are not sounding that much different from Emmer.

In any event, not to worry. The elites in Washington D.C., are all taking a nice vacation (a recess). Perhaps they will feel like being more generous to the peons when they return and will throw out some crumbs.

7. 441 comments on this article so far on Strib site
Glad to know Emmer's latest isn't going over...I just cannot read the comments so thanks to those who have noted the reaction.

And I didn't realize the Federal "tip minimum" was STILL that low.

One too many smacks to the frontal lobe when he's hit a stone and fallen on his face.

10. And as the many commentators who have made remarks about "tipping bartenders"
have alluded...

I do like the comments cautioning Emmer not to eat out in the next few days for fear of what will end up in his food.

Thanks for posting.

The Strib comments were around 760 last time I checked so maybe Emmer got some press with this one!

is that even the usual wing nuts are pretty much avoiding this topic. And the ones that have commented on the article have gone off topic.

23. That is because it hits too close to home
Many know friends or family who work in foodservice, or have themselves at one point. This makes it hit too close to home and Emmer way out there even if they vowed to never vote for a DFLer ever again.

What this would do is keep some GOP voters home rather than be direct votes for the DFL.

21. What?!?
Oh man, you have to see it. It's such a classic. Here's one of my favorite quotes:

"Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not... fuck with us."

I think we'd be a lot better off if those in power were reminded of this from time to time. Like on a daily basis.

My guess is that the next time Emmer eats out, he will be reminded of this BIG time. I sure hope so.

"Clean food, please."
"In that case, sir, may I advise against the lady eating clam chowder?"
"No clam chowder, thank you."

That's such a classic movie.

Edited on Wed Jul-07-10 08:10 PM by FiveGoodMen
"Earning more than the people that employ them"?

Not bloody likely.

I think he just wants to start the next Reagan Welfare Queen lie.

Surely, being the biggest liar is a great honor among his kind.

27. Hell, sign me up.
Waiters earning $100K? Yeah, everyone knows how overpaid wait staff are. That's why there are never any job openings in that field and everyone is always falling over themselves to get a waiter/waitress job.

What a crock.

You're right. It sounds just like the Reagan "welfare queen" crapola.

I don't own many DVDs but that one was a "must have."

It gets watched a lot more than any of my other ones. It's pretty much my "go to" movie.

Like you, I never get sick of it. There's just too many great scenes in it.

28. Emmer holding town hall meeting with service workers July 14 in Roseville
I hope they roast this prick alive. Here's his press release:

Tom Emmer announced today he will hold a town meeting with servers in the hospitality industry next Wednesday to listen to their concerns regarding wages, tips, taxes and health care.
This week Emmer met with business owners around the state as he focused the Freedom and Prosperity Project on jobs and the economy.

"The most important issue facing the next governor is creating jobs and getting our economy back on the path to prosperity," said Emmer. "This week we met with business owners and next week we will listen to the employees, especially servers concerned about the tip credit issue. I'm looking forward to a robust discussion."

What: Town Hall Meeting with servers in the hospitality industry.
When: Wednesday, July 14, 2010 · 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Where: Ol' Mexico Restaurante and Cantina One block north of Larpenteur on Lexington Ave Roseville

30. Didn't Ole Mexico advertise on the local RW radio station?
And probably still do?
The owner/manager did not like a DUer's complaint either.

Maybe they'll tell the wait staff to help out poor Emmer.
