So you, a friend, or loved one are considering joining the military. There's a lot to consider before a decision. After a brief commemoration of Armistice Day/Veterans Day, Michael Orange will offer a short presentation and facilitate a discussion of the truths not told by military recruiters and the Pentagon's $2 billion annual recruiting campaign. In addition, he will address U.S. military actions military personnel had no choice but to support, adolescent rite of passage, and alternative service opportunities.
Michael served in the Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970, including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He experienced combat in numerous patrols, search-and-destroy missions, and other major operations. In 2001, he published a memoir of his service, Fire in the Hole: A Mortarman in Vietnam. Michael teaches classes regarding the history of the Vietnam War. He and his wife, Cynthia, have been members of Unity since 1991.
