St. Cloud Legislative candidate Sue Ek (R)is St. Paul resident: Ineligible
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 10:51 AM by Viking12
Legislative candidate Sue Ek signed an affidavit July 9 saying she lived in St. Paul, 12 days after the deadline to establish residency in St. Cloud for a Dec. 27 special election.

The affidavit, plus the Republican House 15B candidate's record of voting in St. Paul from 2001-04, might disqualify her from eligibility, said David Schultz, a Hamline University and University of Minnesota professor who specializes in election law.

"If she was still living in the house in St. Paul and still registered to vote in St. Paul, she was still a resident of St. Paul," he said.

Minnesota law requires legislative candidates to establish residency in the district they hope to represent at least six months before the election. For this election, the deadline was June 27.

1. It sounds to me as if she quickly tried to maneuver residency
in St Cloud once Opatz resigned. Her admitting that she just signed an affidavit to get the non-profit status in St Paul DOES NOT help her case. Do the Repubs really want someone this ignorant of the law, or maybe she isn't ignorant, but instead is flagrantly ignoring the law to represent us?

2. Just what we need--another "natural family planning" legislator
from the St. Cloud article:

"Ek maintains that she has lived in St. Cloud since 1968 and that the St. Paul home — owned by her parents, David and Catherine Ek — was the office of BOMA-USA, a nonprofit family-planning organization. She is BOMA-USA's executive director ... Neighbors in St. Paul complained to the city June 28 about the number of vehicles parked outside the Niles Avenue home during BOMA-USA's natural family-planning classes."

House DFLer Mary Ellen Otremba, the legislature's WORST anti-choice, anti-family-planning, anti-birth-control zealot, also is a natural family planning "teacher" and has tried in the past to get legislation passed dedicating a percentage of state family planning funds for "natural family planning." Sadly, no one ever called her on this blatant conflict of interest. Otremba also has authored legislation that would permit pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions if it conflicted with their beliefs for any reason.

With any luck this Sue Ek liar will get drummed out of the race before we end up with another one like Otremba at the capitol.

4. Be sure to read the story chat that is included
on stories in the St. Cloud times. There is alot of information about whether she committed a crime.

The poster John Ellenbecker is a lawyer who was formerly the mayor of St. Cloud He was defeated in November.

There are two races in St. Cloud, one is Larry Haws v. Sue Ek. Larry is a long-time and popular director of the parks and recreation dept, also a county commissioner. This is for a state rep position. This seat has been held by democrat Opatz.

The other race is for the state senate. the seat had been held by republican Kleis (he won the mayor race.) It is Tarryl Clark v. OX. Ox is apparently a local conservative talk show host who makes racially derogatory statements. Tarryl has been a Vice Chair of the MN DFL, and has worked as a lobbyist supporting the rights of low-income people. Clark is running an excellent campaign, despite the Governor's effort to keep the student vote down by scheduling the election for Dec. 27th.

Both of these races are very winnable. Help all you can.
