I got called for an issues poll last night
Naturally, they wouldn't tell me who they were calling for but, given the nature of the questions, it wasn't hard to guess which side the poller was on. The questions were so poorly worded, I don't think any professional pollers were involved. Especially as the questioner sounded ready to explode by the time he finished with me. To the best of my recollection here's what they asked.

1. Do you support the idea that it's better to cut spending instead of raising taxes? (me - no)

2. Are you familiar with the 2nd Amendment? (me - duh, yes)
2a. Do you support the 2nd Amendment or do you support more restrictive gun laws? (me - that's a very narrow question, I'd certainly support a ban on assault weapons and I don't believe in conceal and carry so I guess I support more restrictive laws.)

3. Do you think:
a) abortion should be legal all the time.
b) abortion should be legal only in the first 3 month
c) abortion should be legal only when the mother's health is endangered
d) abortion should never be legal
(me - none of those options reflect my view, so I guess I'll have to say a)

4. Do you support an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution defining marriage as only between a man and a woman? (me - no)

5. Do you consider yourself closer to the Democrat (yes, he said Democrat) or Republican party? (me - I consider myself closer to the Farmer Labor party)
- poller repeated the question, obiviously frustrated. I responed "I consider myself closer to the DemocraTIC party."

6. Are you aware that the Republican controlled Minnesota House passed a defense of marriage amendment but that the Democrat controlled Senate refused to act on it? (me - yes, and thank God the D-F-L (enunciated carefully) controls the senate)

Me - don't you think there are more important issues like health care, education and Pawlenty turning Minnesota into a cold Alabama?

Poller "good night" (slam goes his end of the phone).

4. Guns, God and Gays.
The reason they don't want to discuss things like health care and education is that they aren't hot button issues for them, and they don't do policy.

5. Good Job! I got a call once, was short and sweet
and aborted - no pun intended - when I said that, yes, abortion should always be legal and that I am closer to the Democratic opinion.

What I am getting now, and just got one half an hour ago, are calls from the DFL caucus and others and I just told the person calling that I do not wish to discuss politics on Saturday evening.

Normally I let the machine pick the calls in the evening, but thought that Saturday evening the caller would be personal. Duh..

6. I sort of wish that I had pretended that I used to be a Republican
but that I had been forced to change parties because of the extreme positions they now take. Anymore calls like this one and that's what I'll do.

I'm trying to figure out what list I've gotton on that I'm suddenly getting calls like this one and the one I got a couple weeks ago wanting me to call my rep to support the budget bill. The only new places I've sent money to lately are the American Friends Service Committee and St. Jude's Hospital. I doubt the right wing would want a list of donors to the Quakers and I can't imagine Marlo Thomas selling St. Jude's list to Republicans (okay, Marlo probably wouldn't know who their list goes to). But, I don't imagine the right wing would want St. Jude's list seeing as they're practically a bunch of socialists what with not charging for medical care --- unless the Repukes think only Catholics donate to St. Jude's (and yes, I am sort of Catholic, and I sent money to the hospital because I owed the good saint a favor and keeping promises to St. Jude seemed to work pretty well for Danny Thomas.)
