Naturally, they wouldn't tell me who they were calling for but, given the nature of the questions, it wasn't hard to guess which side the poller was on. The questions were so poorly worded, I don't think any professional pollers were involved. Especially as the questioner sounded ready to explode by the time he finished with me. To the best of my recollection here's what they asked.
1. Do you support the idea that it's better to cut spending instead of raising taxes? (me - no)
2. Are you familiar with the 2nd Amendment? (me - duh, yes) 2a. Do you support the 2nd Amendment or do you support more restrictive gun laws? (me - that's a very narrow question, I'd certainly support a ban on assault weapons and I don't believe in conceal and carry so I guess I support more restrictive laws.)
3. Do you think: a) abortion should be legal all the time. b) abortion should be legal only in the first 3 month c) abortion should be legal only when the mother's health is endangered d) abortion should never be legal (me - none of those options reflect my view, so I guess I'll have to say a)
4. Do you support an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution defining marriage as only between a man and a woman? (me - no)
5. Do you consider yourself closer to the Democrat (yes, he said Democrat) or Republican party? (me - I consider myself closer to the Farmer Labor party) - poller repeated the question, obiviously frustrated. I responed "I consider myself closer to the DemocraTIC party."
6. Are you aware that the Republican controlled Minnesota House passed a defense of marriage amendment but that the Democrat controlled Senate refused to act on it? (me - yes, and thank God the D-F-L (enunciated carefully) controls the senate)
Me - don't you think there are more important issues like health care, education and Pawlenty turning Minnesota into a cold Alabama?
Poller "good night" (slam goes his end of the phone).
