Property taxes
I received a notice last week that proposed increases in my property taxes for next year amount to 36% (Ramsey County).
Whether you rent or own your own home, this is going to hurt a lot.

1. This kind of stuff happens because of stupid "no new taxes" pledges
by Republican governors.

The services still have to be provided, the state aid is reduced or gone, so what can a local government do but raise property taxes? :-(

God forbid that we should bring corporate taxes or taxes on the rich back to what they used to be.

4. Absolutely. It also is a form of flat tax
since property is taxed at the same mill rate in every county/city.

5. I'm surprised they didn't rename it "property fee" because
then it would have been fine. Oh, and ex-mayor Randy Kelly said he held the line on property taxes so I think you guys are just trying to make him look bad because he endorsed Dubya. :sarcasm:

I received my statement last week or so too. I just checked and mine went up 24.4%. I vaguely remember opening up the statement, yelling "Holy f#$&ing sh!t!", and tossing it aside to be dealt with at a later date. Oh, and I remember thanking RK for keeping property taxes down. Man, I thought 24.4% was bad but 36%? Ouch. But hey, the economy is doing great so I'm SURE your raise will more than cover the extra property taxes you have to pay. I know mine will. That is, if you substitute the phrase "second job" for "raise" in the previous sentence, it will cover it. Maybe. Time to email Pawlenty and tell him he's doing a "heckuva job." Can't raise taxes on the rich. Let's screw the "commoners" instead. Asshat.

6. Bait and switch bastards
Cry and moan about high taxes, then shift the burden to where there is less "together-power" so they can fund their bloated treasury-shifting to the upper classes, their obscene Pharisee-chest-pounding pseudo-religion rip-offs, and their war- and death-loving kakistocracy.

7. C'mon. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.
Yeah, you pretty much summed it up. Well, except that I have a slight bone to pick with you regarding the use of the term "kakistocracy." Wikipedia defines kakistocracy as "rule by incompetents, rather than outright evil or larcenous people, as is the case with a kleptocracy." Offhand, I'd say we're dealing with a mix of both. A kakikleptocracy or maybe a kleptokakistocracy. Take your pick. Either way, it sucks.

Also, plase make sure to not confuse kakistocracy with Kakistocracy. The former is no fun at all but the latter is a cool anarcho-punk band out of Asheville, NC. ;)

10. A Republican co-worker...
of Mr. Zookeeper, stopped by our home recently and commented on how much he liked our hilly, woodsy neighborhood. He asked about our property taxes and said that his (in White Bear Lake) had just increased drastically and he was considering moving.

As I said, he's a Republican. I really had to bite my tongue.
