3.2 beer
This is kinda a minor thing given the shenanigans of Republicans locally and nationally, but ...

I really hate the alcohol laws here, although I usually can think far enough ahead so they're not a hinderance. There is not reason I can think of for laws on what stores can sell what alcoholic beverages when other than government claiming to know better than store owners and consumers.

Case in point: I could really go for a pint or quart of strong beer now.

1. in pennsylvania, where i lived for 12 years before moving here,
grocery stores don't sell alcohol at all. i was really shocked the first time i saw beer in a grocery store, and then i was informed it had less alcoholic content.

there is a grocery store by where i lived in PA that has a liquor store inside of it, but it's seperate from the grocery store. all other grocery stores i've seen in pa just sell non-alcoholic beer.

2. Blame it on the liquor lobby
The liquor/beer lobby has it pretty good in Minnesota, and what they haven't screwed up, the prohibitionists in the churches have. We have probably the worst laws in the country (other than dry counties down south). Even Utah is better! It took years for brewpubs to become legal in Minnesota. Years more before growlers were legal. But we still have moronic Sunday blue laws (you can thank the churches for that), antiquated liquor-store-only sales, exclusive distributorships that make it impossible for small companies to get on the shelves, and yes, 3.2 beer. And then there's the under-the-table illegal shit that happens daily--payoffs to put certain brands on tap or get better shelf space, trip giveaways, etc. It's an ugly, ugly business.

Of course, when the beer distributors used to keep legislators' personal refrigerators well-stocked, it's no wonder they've never been interested in changing the system. Liquor and beer distribution was taken over from the mob after prohibition, but in many respects, it still operates like the mob.

4. Minnesota law requires liquor stores by supermarkets
to be in a seperate building, they are usually just next door in a closed off section from the food.

8. Same in Oregon
The liquor stores carried only hard liquor and mixers, not beer or wine.

5. It should be up to the free markets to decide....
what consumers want to purchase. Isn't that a republican line? For once I agree!

Sometimes my friends and I would go fishing on a Sunday afternoon, and enjoy a beer or two. Nothing major, not leaving garbage or anything. Why can't I buy beer on a Sunday? What does it hurt?

Oh well, I guess grabbing extra on Satuday works fine as well.

6. Happily, Summit makes a 3.2 Extra Pale Ale....
which we found in a grocery store on a Sunday and went very well with a good, spicy Jambalaya Mr. Zookeeper made that day. But, when the only choice is something like 3.2 Bud Light, I just pass.
