Remembering 9/11: Governor Granholm called for Michigan citizens to fly flags at half mast and to recognize a moment of silence this morning at 8:46am, the time when the first plane hit the World Trade Center five years ago today.

Fighting for Michigan Families: Today, Governor Granholm is announcing a new program which will save thousands of Detroit, Pontiac, and Flint residents 10% on car and home insurance.

The Detroit Free Press: Car insurance plan to help residents in cities
Today in Detroit, Gov. Jennifer Granholm is to announce the partnership between the Delta Township insurance company and nonprofit community groups in Detroit and Flint. Starting this week, metro Detroit and Flint residents who have good driving records will be able to buy insurance policies through local Auto-Owners agents and receive an automatic 10% discount off the insurer's usual rates. Additional rate cuts are possible based on individual cases. The insurance rate-cut program was announced earlier this summer; about 5,000 people have filled out surveys to see whether they're eligible for the discounts, said Leslee Fritz, a spokeswoman for Granholm. The state offices of Community and Faith-based Services and Financial and Insurance Services and the nonprofit community groups Metro Group Quality of Life Improvement Association in Detroit and Unification for Urban Equality in Flint negotiated with four insurance companies that competed for the business.

But joined by Gov. Jennifer Granholm and newly-picked site manager David Dupre, he announced a renaissance, a recovery not just for the global Dow, but for the local one. "Michigan Operations -- the birthplace of Dow -- is thriving once again," Liveris said. Dow employees and contractors, local officials and politicians are celebrating a "rededication" of the site, along with its more than $240 million in new investment. Granholm congratulated Dow and Mi Ops on a "hard-fought turnaround." As she devises a plan for the state to overcome its economic hardships and gain a competitive edge, she said the parallels to the Dow shift upward are "so interesting." Just as Dow has had to strategize and diversify, the state has to move beyond the auto industry, Granholm said. "We cannot put all of our eggs in that one basket." Dow fits neatly into the governor's plans to diversify in four key areas, including advanced manufacturing, homeland security and defense, life sciences and alternative energy. She and Liveris have had scheduled monthly meetings, sometimes via phone, to talk about partnerships, she said… "Success did not happen overnight," Liveris said. "Restoring the international competitiveness of Michigan Operations was the result of several years of hard work and dedication."
