The 19th Annual Cranbrook Peace Lecture and Award Ceremony (with Howard Zinn) will occur at Cobo Hall on Sunday, Nov. 5. A strolling hors d’oeuvre reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Annual Lecture following at 7. For further information visit www.cranbrookpeace.org or contact Matt Hoerauf, Director of Development at 248-345-3475 or matt.hoerauf@peoplepc.com

About Howard Zinn: Howard Zinn is a lifelong historian, activist, and author of the bestselling book “A People’s History of the United States” now used as a history textbook in high schools and colleges. Zinn has been a catalyst for progressive change for more than 60 years. Noam Chomsky said, “it is no exaggeration to say he has changed the consciousness of a generation.”

• 1930s: Zinn organizes a union while working in a shipyard
• 1940s: Zinn enlists in the Air Force during WWII and drops newly invented napalm – an experience that shapes his pacifist outlook
• 1950s: Zinn teaches at Spelman College, taking a leading role in Civil Rights Movement
• 1960s: Zinn protests Vietnam War with students, and negotiates the peaceful return of American Servicemen from Vietnam.

Q. I am a big Howard Zinn fan! How can I help spread the word about his lecture in Detroit?
A. Host a Howard Zinn House Party!

Want to help us spread the word about what may be Howard Zinn’s first-ever engagement in Michigan? Then host a Howard Zinn house party! Invite some friends over, provide some snacks and beverages, and get the video documentary of Howard Zinn’s life, You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train which can be purchased or rented at your local video retailer, or online at various sources. The video is about an hour and a quarter and gives an excellent overview of Zinn’s life, his participation in history, and his firm belief that individual people can change society. To sign up to help, visit this opportunity at www.VolunteerMatch.org under “Cranbrook Peace Foundation” or by clicking here.

Youth Opportunity to Meet Howard Zinn and hear him for 1 cent! On the same day as the Howard Zinn lecture, Sunday, Nov. 5, a group of 55 young people between the ages of 14 and 25 will gather together from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Matrix Theatre in downtown Detroit for a youth-directed town hall discussion of issues that concern you – such as the environment, race relations, war, or what young people can do to make a difference. To sign up for this opportunity, visit www.VolunteerMatch.org under “Cranbrook Peace Foundation” or click here. Young people with a student ID or anyone under 25 also can attend the Annual Lecture at Cobo Hall for .01. Reserve your youth ticket here.
