DEMAND RUTH JOHNSON RESIGN AS COUNTY CLERK
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 10:12 PM by bfealk
Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Oakland County complex in front of the courthouse at 1200 N. Telegraph. Please RSVP ASAP.

Signs will be provided. If you bring your own sign, please keep in mind the focus of this protest is to get Ruth Johnson to resign or step aside temporarily while she is actively running for office and the fact that she has duties that involve her counting votes in Oakland county. This is akin to Ken Blackwell being Secretary of State while running for governor.

We need a crowd of at least 10-20 people to have a good crowd for media.

RSVP TO BRUCE FEALK, BFEALK@WIDEOPENWEST.COM

3. Observer Eccentric: New voting machines not entirely up to snuff 8/18/06
http://www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060818/LIFE/608180313/1099

New voting machines not entirely up to snuff

As she predicted before the Aug. 8 primary, the overseer of elections in Oakland County said new voting machines were not completely up to snuff when voters hit the polls.

County Clerk Ruth Johnson predicted there could be problems because of technical shortcomings of the new Help Americans Vote Act machines.

The HAVA was passed in the wake of the Florida recount in the 2000 presidential election.

More than a week after the election, workers at the county building are still compiling data about how the new HAVA machines performed. In short -- it doesn't look good.

"There were more than 100 problems," Johnson said. "About 20 machines needed to be swapped out. For state-of-the-art machines, that number is too high."

As Johnson said before the election, HAVA put the cart before the horse by mandating new machines before coming up with standards for their performance. Because many communities had machines only a year old at the time -- namely Southfield -- HAVA should have targeted antiquated machinery first rather than every voting machine in the nation.

"They should have allowed communities with new machines to wait and given the companies a chance to catch up," she said. "There has to be a plan of action; we have to have machines that are reliable."

Tabulating machines had to be turned on and off a few times to run correctly, memory cards and high-speed counters failed and the handicapped-accessible Automark machines folded ballots into accordion shapes. Some machines had to be swapped out mid-election.

Birmingham City Clerk Nancy Weiss had to swap out two new HAVA machines during primary voting.

"They wouldn't take ballots. It didn't delay the voting too much," she said. "Voters were able to put ballots into an auxiliary machine."

There was also a slight problem with understanding the machines' error messages. Clerk's office workers were not familiar with the messages and that slowed things down until vendor Electronic Systems and Software was able to decipher them.

Bloomfield Township Clerk Janet Roncelli said 11 of the Automark voting machines failed there at one time or another for one reason or another.

"We spent a tremendous amount of time on this equipment," she said. "We're disappointed it didn't work as expected."

She said one of those machines was replaced and the rest were cajoled into working for the rest of the night. She said upgrades were expected to come before the November general election and she was "optimistic."

Roncelli wasn't the only clerk thinking things should be better in November.

"We'll be able to address the problems by November," Weiss said. "We're learning. We're starting to recognize the problems and how to resolve them."

All that aside, Johnson said the vote counts were good because of the people working to resolve the various problems.

"Every vote was counted," Johnson said. "That's because of the local clerks. The election worked despite HAVA."

4. MEDIA WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE AT THE STEP DOWN RUTH JOHNSON RALLY
I have just spoken to the Oakland Press and the Detroit News. They will be in attendance at tomorrow's rally, so we need as many people to show up as possible to make a good showing for the press. Hoping to have TV coverage too.

Pass this on to your e-mail lists.

Thursday, 1 p.m. 1200 Telegraph, Pontiac, in front of the Commissioner's Auditorium.

5. Not defending her
but I am just curious. Has any politican anywhere, either Democrat or Republican, ever resigned to run for office?

Before you say that she is in charge of the voting, I would say that the city clerk in Wayne County didn't resign to run for re-election. In fact this happens all across the country.

I'm concerned about voter backlash. Some will look upon us as a party of crybabies, calling foul, and that we do the same thing as Johnson ourself.

6. That's not the point
Ruth Johnson is running for the top of the ticket and is in charge of the voting in probably the county that will decide the election. I think it's appropriate for her to step aside while she is running for Lt. Governor to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

7. It's exactly the point
No county clerk, wether Democrat or Republican has stepped down from their position to run for another office. Running for one office while holding another happens all across the country.

BTW. Saw you pic in the Okland Press today.

8. Just because it hasn't happened in the past...
doesn't mean it shouldn't happen now. If Ken Blackwell had stepped down as chair of the GOP committee to reelect Bush/Cheney we may not be in the mess we're in now.

If Katherine Harris had recused herself due to her conflict as co-chair of Bush/Cheney in FL, we would never have had a President Bush in the first place.

This is a pre-emptive attack aimed at making sure that Michigan's election has no similar conflicts of interest.

It's just wrong for Clerk Johnson to have anything to do with counting votes in the most important county in Michigan. No Republican has ever been elected in Michigan without winning Oakland County. Do you think it's an accident that DeVos chose Johnson? I think not.

9. Why didn't you call for Kerry to step down
When he ran for President, or Edwards when he was chosen as a running mate?

I don't want to be viewed as hypocrites. We, as a party need to act as we expect others to act. This "Don't do as I do, do as I say" attitude doesn't make it. It's why we lose. I'm tired of loosing.

Where was the conflict of interest?

13. There's a difference between holding one office while running for
another, and running for an office while holding the office that counts the votes.
Let's say for instance I held the office of secretary in my union and wanted to run for treasurer. There would be no reason for me to step down from my current position. There is no conflict of interest. However, I should not volunteer to be on the committee that counts the ballots. That would be inappropriate, and my union would not allow it.
This is a special situation.

14. Very good explanation, livvy
Kerry and Edwards had no conflict of interest whatsoever. However, Katherine "the witch" Harris and Kenneth Blackwell had definite conflicts of interest.

It was great being at the convention with you this weekend. I'm so glad we got the candidates we wanted. On to November!
