Who's your favorite '68 Tiger?
Mine would probably be Gates Brown. I remember him pinch-hitting and winning both games of a double header in the 9th inning of each game. Yours?

1. I was a Little League second baseman
So I was always partial to Dick McAuliffe.

Do you remember the Detroit Ceasars softball team in the 70s? I lived near where they played in East Detroit, and went to see them frequently. A number of the 68 Tigers played for them, Norm Cash, Jim Northrup, Mickey Stanley. But Stanley was the only one who could hit a softball very well. He was always another favorite.

Mickey Lolich. I've said a bunch of times that had Lolich played for the Yankees, he'd be in the Hall of Fame by now.
Hey, I was a left-handed 12-year-old baseball fanatic in 1968. When we played sandlot ball, I had to be either Norm Cash or Mickey Lolich. I can still do Lolich's stance on the mound pretty well.
I got to meet him back in 1992 or so. Still one of my biggest sports thrills ever (and remember, I'm supposed to be a sports writer by trade -- I've interviewed Reggie Jackson, Al Kaline, Bill Buckner and Kirby Puckett among others). None was cooler than meeting Mickey.
John
So, it's now 22 days, 21 hours and 14 minutes to FUNDAY. Who's coming?

I'm a girrrrrl, but I played on a male little league baseball team back in the day. I was an awesome catcher, and he was my inspiration! I even got to meet him at a local (Pontiac area) little league fundraiser. That was way, way cooooooool. I'll remember it forever.

P.S. I still have my teeny-tiny catcher's mitt! :-)

edited for funky formatting issues

11. Yup Ubetcha. Pure athlete.
My second choice would probably be Al Kaline or Charlie Maxwell, although I liked "Walking Man" Eddie Yost at 3rd, too.

6. Stormin' Norman Cash!
With Mickey Stanley and Dick McAuliffe close behind. We were in grade school during the World Series. They let us all out of class and put us in the gym (we had these old cement benches) and we watched the games on those giant A/V televisions (remember the kind that had to be strapped on to the wheel bases?) If I recall correctly, a couple of times they wheeled the TVs directly into the classroom and I'm guessing there just weren't enough for every single room - so they herded us all into the gym.

or Don Wert, or Willie, or Norm, Al, Stanley or the Mick. Damn, that's a tough question.

10. Al Kaline. Always. I remember the Gator hitting those homers.
Was that against Baltimore? Long time ago. Gotta go with Kaline; idolized him as a kid, grew up without a Dad, and he never did anything that wasn't pure class, and was a fine role model for someone who didn't have one at home.

12. I remember seeing Al throw a strike to the plate from deep right center.
It was awesome. Nailed the runner on a sacrifice fly. What an arm!

13. Earl Wilson
A pitcher that could hit. He even pinch hit on the days he wasn't pitching.
