I would appreciate recommendations for a good SE Mich. charity.
Hi all,

It is the time of the year that I take advantage of the tax code to direct some money toward worthy charities. I have a few favorites, but my strategy is usually to give to a few well established charities as well as to look for unique/underserved charities.

So far, the charities already on my list:

Gleaner's Food Bank
Project THAW
Mich. Humane Society

Any suggestions for a worthy fourth charity? I would like to a) keep the money in SE Mich (we have an extraordinary amount of need here); b) focuse on emergency (poverty) relief. I've been considering giving directly to a soup kitchen or homeless shelter in Detroit, but I am not sure which one to pick...

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

6. Leader Dogs for the Blind is one of my favorites.
They're in Rochester Hills.

It's not an emergency shelter, but they do good work.

I work in the construction industry and have performed rehabilitation projects on HUD homes. There are non-profit housing agencies that accept private donations in addition to the HUD contributions that they use to purchase, rehabilitate, and then sell homes at below market rates to people that couldn't otherwise afford homes.
Most counties have an "Office of Community Development" that administers the projects for HUD. The county OCD's could put you in touch with private non-profits that perform the same activities.
