Liberty Mutual in Boston as a place to work
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 05:45 AM by NewJeffCT
I was contacted by LM in downtown Boston for what seems like a pretty good job in the financial reporting. Has anybody heard about them as a place to work?

edited to add - are there any places around Boston that are good for families & reasonably affordable?

Thanks

2. well, how far out can you live & have a reasonable commute?
meaning, less than an hour each way?

My wife & I both like the Boston area, but we'd both need to make like $150K per year to afford to live anywhere decent and fairly close to Boston.

3. Heard good things about Liberty Mutual
It is an expensive area, but if you make some tradeoffs, you can do it. Consider towns close to Boston that are a bit more affordable. If you pm me, I will give you some suggestions. Where from CT are you coming from (helps to compare house prices).

6. one thing I'm suspicious about...
Is that they may be available to interview me on a Saturday... not a good sign for the working conditions in the financial reporting/accounting department.

But, I will check into Plymouth, as my wife was contacted by a company in Plymouth a few months back. (somebody had PM'd me on Plymouth) We could live in Plymouth and she'd have a short commute & I could take the train into Bah-stin. Of course, that assumes the company is still interested.

8. Regarding Plymouth...
Plymouth is a long commute into Boston. The train is a good bet, but the drive is a nightmare. Route 3 from the South Shore is generally a parking lot. Schools are good in Plymouth.
Try going to www.nemoves.com. It is a Coldwell Banker website that has many resources and links to help you with a move. There are community profiles and even town movies, describing just about every town in Massachusetts. Again, if you need any help, PM me and I will be happy to assist.

7. just met someone who works there ...
she said it's a very good place to work ...

she said they have all kinds of "employee oriented" programs there ...

they also have their own healthcare facility on-site (i think that's what she said) ...

overall, she was extremely positive ...

9. The east-west commute is easier
IMHO, of course, but I think the traffic is easier to bear going east-west than north-south and in any case access to the commuter rail is a must. Boston driving is painful at best.

There are Boston workers now commuting from southern Maine (!) to escape housing costs.

If you go to www.mbta.com you may want to check out the communities on the Fitchburg and Framingham/Worcester commuter rail lines. I commuted to Boston for years during grad school from Waltham, which is a relatively affordable place 12 miles west. Some friends of mine are commuting to Cambridge from Littleton, MA via the Fitchburg line.

Drop me a PM if I can help, I'm a lifelong Masshole for better or worse :-)
