Flamebait!! Should Western Massachusetts secede?
How many of you think of Worcester as "western Massachusetts" and believe the state ends at Springfield? And that beyond Springfield is just hideous wilderness?

Well here in the wilds on far western Massaachusetts, we think of Springfield as Central Massachusetts, and Worcester as a suburb of Boston. We're more familiar with Albany politics than what goes on in Boston.

You guys in the east talk funny. We root for the Yankees as much as the Red Sox.

Nyah, nyah!

(The above is merely good humored banter. We in the west love you guys. Really. )

Too far from far west Massachusetts.

Vt would be nice. (Home state of You-Know-Who.)

5. Out of curiosity
If I were to be setting up an office responsible for Western Massachusetts, what would be a good centralized locale? Any reason to pick someplace other than Northampton? I'm trying to avoid Springfield. Pretend I'm only interested in travel times.

10. The middle of nowhere
Actually, it depends on how you define western Masachusetts. If you consider it the Connecticut River Valley to New York state, probably the most central location would be a shack in the eastern Berkshires.

If it extends further east, Springfield might be your best bet because of the Mass Pike.

12. Ok, fine
I define Western Massachusetts as being everything under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth that you can't get to on the T.

I wasn't speaking strictly geographically, but geographically in relation to major population centers, e.g. Amherst and the other Valley towns, Springfield, Worcester and, yes, also Pittsfield et al. in the Berkshires. I've decided to put the office in Northampton, mainly because I like it better than Springfield; its right on I-91 anyway, and getting to the Mass Pike and Springfield is really no biggie.

14. Good choice
NoHampton is a great place. Certainly a lot more fun than Springfield.

13. Nah
Because who would each part of the state bitch about? :)

(speaking as someone who lives outside the reach of the T, yet doesn't live in western Mass. Now the true question is if those of us on the Cape and Islands should secede...;))
