Ring proves odd man out in school race
Tingley, Morgan triumph

By Steven Fletcher Staff Writer

ROCKPORT — Standing by a nine-year incumbent and current chairwoman, and going off the ballot to back a first-time write-in candidate, Rockport voters Tuesday chose Melissa Tingley and Martha Morgan Tuesday for seats on their School Committee for the next three years.

The School Committee race marked the only contested race in Rockport's annual election, with two ballot candidates, Tingley, and Historical District Commission member Jonathan Ring, and write-in challenger Morgan courting votes in a contest that generated intense interest over the final two weeks.

Tingley received 775 votes from Rockport's three voting districts, while Morgan, a write-in candidate, earned 815 to capture the second seat and the popular vote.

Ring garnered 300 votes, finishing as the odd man out.

1. Congrats on the victory.... I'm pleased....however
Someone should teach the writer of that article in the G D Times how to WRITE!!!

I have a hard time, (as an outsider) understanding the sentences.

Here's a sample re-write I would have given to my High School Frehman English students.

Headline:

"Write-in Candidate wins election to School Board"

In two open seats on the Rockport School board, one write-in candidate,Martha Morgan, and one ballot candidate, Melissa Tingley, beat off the second ballot candidate, and anti-gay activist, Jonathan Ring.

Tingley received 775 votes from Rockport's three voting districts, while Morgan, a write-in candidate, earned 815 to capture the second seat and the popular vote.

Ring garnered 300 votes.

The overall turnout numbered 1132, or roughly 23.7 percent of the town's 5,500-plus registered voters.

The two winners will serve 3 year terms.

Now it makes sense.
