Do you like living in Mass?
I have been reading on various message boards and the whining from the RW how awful our fair state is. I agree that there is a lot wrong: Romneycare, deficits, cost of living, etc. What do you like about living here, and what do you think could be better?

Thanks,
Allie

1. We have Cape Cod, we have mountains, we have museums,
universities, lecture series, the best classical music, so many music and sports opportunities.

We have the North Shore, the South Shore, the hills around Worcester, the state parks, the chance to get out and hike, bike, so much more at no or low cost.

If you're a senior, you can take courses at state colleges for free. If you're a student, there's more in Mass than any student can take in.

If you're sick, or disabled, there's more medical services here, the best in the world, and only one or two hours from anybody.

Best of all, to me, there's such a solid majority of liberal thinking people here, and such an array of differences, strengths and weaknesses among us all... we really do quite well.

Not that I don't like other states, Vermont is one of my favorites, but there's no ocean there, just mountain and rural beauty, and lots more snow and cold in winter. New Hampshire and Maine, wow, I love those places, too, but wouldn't want to live there always, I lived in both of those in my life, not as exciting as Mass.

Oh, I like California, Oregon, Washington, even New Mexico, and Colorado, too...lived in two of them, visited them and others often, but they just are not as exciting to me, great to visit, wouldn't want to live there.

2. Pretty much what the other person said
I was born here...lived here all my life except for a very brief stint in Tennessee. Could not wait to get back here.

The weather/seasons make things interesting. I like how we all, even those of us who live in cities, have a touch of that "Pioneer spirit" in us. There's lots of History. I love my French Canadian heritage...many of my ancestors came here from Canada to work in the mills of Western Mass.

Seashore, big cities, mountains, college towns, small towns, smaller rural villages...

We have it all, it seems.

Autumn in the Hilltowns is the best. I mean, the absolute best.

And I'm just perverse enough to delight in how disgusted RWers are at us "Massachusetts Liberals"

:7

PS...I've visited Maine quite a few times, and if I couldn't live in Mass, I'd live there.

3. I love Maine too, but winter is too long and summer is too short.
I hate winter and they get too much snow for my taste. :-) I love what you guys said, and I agree.

4. I love New England
I'd live in any New England state. I live in MA because it's where I grew up and it's where I've found work that has kept me sheltered and fed for all of my adult life.

Only one member of my immediate family ever saw fit to set up household outside of New England.

5. I love living here, have my whole life

lived in Pittsfield, beautiful Berkshire mountains, went to UMASS Amherst, stayed in Happy Valley for many years and now live north of Boston.

Its beautiful, liberal, tolerant. Good educational influences from many colleges.

Down side: state politics pretty entrenched in old ways of doing things/ corruption.

But I don't ever want to live anywhere else than Mass.

6. We have the Celtics!!!!
While we don't have Ted any more, we still have Ed Markey, Mike Capuano, Barney Frank, Margaret Marshall, and a host of other excellent public Servants.

I also love the changing seasons, including Winter. I spent a year in San Diego one Winter, amd it was boring.:boring:

I love that I can get to most of New England and even New York, (State, not City:puke:) in just a few hours' driving.

8. Mass is home to me, and I'm very happy about that
Don't get me wrong, I love visiting other places. But I am proud Masshole, through and through, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I understand this place, and it understands me. There is culture, history, lots of other liberal-minded folks, the ocean, the mountains, and lots of hard-working, good-hearted people. There are opportunities for those with the drive to go for them. If you are looking for a place to reinvent yourself, this is a great place to do it.
