ADL wants Randolph (Mass.) official to quit

Posted on November 8, 2007 by Victor DeRubeis

Leaders of the Anti-Defamation League want Maureen Kenney to resign after her remarks regarding the school superintendent’s religion and ethnicity.

The New England region of the organization called comments by Kenney, a school committee member and selectman, “outrageous.”

During a contract negotiation session on Oct. 23, Kenney said she felt School Superintendent Richard Silverman’s request for up to five days of paid leave for the death of a close family member was unnecessary and excessive.

“It is not the standard in industry,” Kenney is quoted as saying. “Besides, don’t you Jews plant them within 24 hours?”

Randolph school chief alleges harassment

RANDOLPH - School Superintendent Richard Silverman says he was harassed about his religion by school committee member Maureen Kenney. Silverman says Kenney questioned his request for five days bereavement leave in a new contract, and said to him, ‘‘Besides, don’t you Jews plant them within 24 hours.’’

‘‘I don’t see any side curls on your head, so what the hell do you need five days of bereavement leave for,’’ Silverman quotes Kenney as saying in a letter he sent to the chairman of the school committee. Side curls are worn by male Hasidic Jews.

Silverman wrote that he told Kenney ‘‘she had no idea what my religious practices were and that she had no business trying to intimidate me with comments about my religion and ethnicity. I told her that I felt this amounted to harassment based on my religion.’’
