Any Duers live around Middleboro? That is one huge town meeting today
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 06:38 AM by zippy890
to vote on the Wampanoag casino.

estimating 10,000 people will be at that town meeting to vote Yes or No.

they are predicting it will pass, then on to legislature and governor.

Since I don't live in the area, I don't really have an opinion. But my thinking is, if the townspeople vote yes, (and since I don't live there
 ) then why shouldn't Mass. have a casino. Everybody I know drives/buses down to Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun out of state to gamble.

shouldn't we keep our inevitable gambling hoards' money for our own?

1. I live fairly close to there
I was driving through the "rotary" yesterday evening and the supporters were out in large numbers holding signs of support. There were a few NO signs, but most were in support.

The biggest issues I can see (as someone who lives close but not in the community itself) is two things: 1. Middleboro doesn't have the infrastructure to support the traffic that would be caused by something as large as this. There are highways that intersect, but they all dump out onto two lane roads. The backups will be astronomical for the area they are in.
2. They don't have the base to fill all the positions in the area either. Middleboro is a small little town and I can't imagine that they have enough unemployed to supply a work force.

I think they would be better off, for those two reasons alone, placing the casino in New Bedford instead.

It will be interesting to see how the vote goes today.

2. It will have an impact on more than just Middleboro
I don't live in that part of the state, but I hope the surrounding towns get some benefit from a casino as well, there was an article in the globe last week about how the CT casinos affected the surronding towns that did not get the extra cash and infrastructure upgrades of the immediate local where the casinos were built.
