Murray says she will allow vote on gay marriage amendment

BOSTON --Newly elected Senate President Therese Murray said
Thursday she would work with gay rights advocates to defeat
a proposed constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage
-- but won't block lawmakers from voting on the measure.

Some gay marriage supporters had hoped the Plymouth
Democrat, who will preside over the next joint session
of the House and Senate, would use any one of a number
of parliamentary maneuvers to block a vote.

On Thursday, a day after her fellow senators elected her to
one of the three most powerful posts on Beacon Hill, Murray
said she would allow the vote, but would work to defeat the
measure that would reverse the historic 2003 court ruling
allowing same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.

Murray voted against the proposed amendment last year.
