Wind-turbine maker Vestas to slow Colorado job growth
By Mark Jaffe

A weak market for wind turbines in the U.S. will slow job growth at Vestas Wind Systems' four Colorado plants, Ditlev Engel, the company's chief executive, said Tuesday.

"When the world's biggest market takes a breather for a year, it's tough," Engel said in a telephone interview.

Vestas, the world's largest wind-turbine manufacturer, is investing $1 billion in four Colorado plants.

The Windsor facility is already manufacturing blades. The Pueblo plant recently completed its first tower, and two plants in Brighton are set to open in 2010, Engel said.

The plants are slated to create about 2,500 new jobs, according to the company.

In the company's third-quarter results, released Tuesday, Vestas said, "Due to the credit crisis, the upgrading in the USA is not progressing as quickly as planned."

The credit crunch and the recession stalled many wind-turbine projects, said John Hardy, an analyst with Broadpoint AmTech.

"Wind-farm projects are capital-intensive and require financing. There just wasn't any," Hardy said.

The slowdown in hiring is a way for the company to manage costs, Hardy said.

Vestas also is facing stiff competition from GE Energy and Sie mens USA, Hardy said.

"At the moment, the U.S. market is characterized by excess capacity, which results in non-attractive prices and conditions on certain projects," Vestas said in its earnings report.

"The upgrading of the staff at the new factories in the USA will consequently take place in line with the order intake," the company said.

"We are going to get to 2,500 jobs; it is just a question of how quickly," Engel said.

hmmm 2500 jobs some day-a billion invested- i'll bet my mother could've put the state to work with that kinda capital in her budget!
vote no on tabor!

1. i'll add this

so you think every thing in colorado is rosy; so you think Ray is always right and forth coming? man are you ever being snookered!
here's the latest going on in colorado:
State employees, many of whom are set to take four furlough days this year, will see four more unpaid days in the first six months of 2010, Gov. Bill Ritter said Tuesday.

"I understand these furlough days will be a hardship on employees and their families and on those who rely on the services that state employees provide," Ritter, a Democrat, said in a statement.

"But these difficult economic times demand this sacrifice from all of us — and state employees are stepping up and sharing in the sacrifices that all families and all businesses are making," he said. "These furlough days are just one of many tough choices we will be making over the coming year to keep the budget balanced in a fair and responsible way."

Ritter's office, which has bridged a $320 million deficit in the current budget year, is expected today to reveal its plans to deal with a remaining shortfall estimated at $270 million. The state has closed a $1.8 billion deficit in the past several months.

State employees have two furlough days left this year: Nov. 27, the Friday after Thanksgiving; and Dec. 31, the Thursday before New Year's Day.

About 15,500 state employees have had to take furlough days, leading to closures of driver's license offices, the Department of Public Health and Environment's vital records office, state history museums and administrative offices for executive branch departments.

The eight furlough days are expected to save the state $27.2 million.

hmmm hmmm seems we have a lot in common -and the worker pays the price!
did you know that colorado led the business and home foreclosures in the nation in 2006,2007? did you know they were c# 5 in foreclosures last year? this certainly isn't the picture Ray has been painting!
but then when has ray been up front aboutanything he's pushing? tabor was suspended the last time the voterd turned it down -ray had to know it but he kept it under wraps until others broke the story!
vote no on tabor!

get avtive we have enough problems of our own without importing a failed system from another state!
tabor was suspended in 2006 in colorado for 5 years! why -because the rachet down effect killed their ability to keep things running!
it still is suspended and the reason is they can't ammend it enough to make it workable!
VOTE NO ON TABOR!

2. Wow
That is a horrible example you've just provided. The company blames the horrible US economy, but they're still choosing to invest in Colorado and create new jobs there. Whose side are you really on?!
