Castine, ME. – The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners (7-3) will host the Plymouth State University Panthers (9-1) on Saturday afternoon for New England Football Conference (NEFC) Championship at Ritchie Field. The title game will feature two of the top rushing offenses and two of the top running backs in the nation. The kick-off will take place at 12pm and the gates will open at 9am. Adult tickets will be $5 per person while student and youth tickets will be $3 apiece.
Maine Maritime, the winner of the Bogan Division boasted a 6-1 conference record and has won seven of their last eight games, while Plymouth State, winner of the Boyd Division, has a perfect 7-0 conference record and has won eight straight games.
Both teams rank in the top five nationally in rushing offense coming into the game. MMA is ranked second in the country averaging 383.4 yards per game on the ground and have rushed for 3,834 yards, which is a school and NEFC record. Plymouth is ranked fourth in the nation, averaging 300 yards per contest and has amassed 3,000 yards on the ground.
Jim Bower (MMA) and Jeff Mack (PSU) are the team leaders in rushing and rank among the nations best. Bower is ranked third in the nation, averaging 165 yards per game and has rushed for 1,652 yards and has scored 24 touchdowns on the year. Mack is ranked eighth in the nation in yards per game with 154 and has rushed for 1,540 with 18 touchdowns.
The Panther defense is led by junior Jim Sestito who leads the NEFC in sacks with 7.5 and is fifth in the conference in tackles for loss with 13. Plymouth State has the #1 ranked rushing defense in the NEFC, allowing only 105 yards per game on the ground. Zach Parsons has four interceptions to lead the Panthers.
The Maine Maritime defense, led by the linebacker core of Wade Mondoux, Travis Fergola, and Joel Chadbourne, boasts three of the top tacklers in the conference. Mondoux (5 interceptions) is second in the conference in tackles with 10.6 per game while Fergola and Chadbourne average 8.9 and 7.5 respectively. The defensive line, anchored by seniors Cody Andrews and Steve Keroack ranks as one of the best in the NEFC. Andrews averages 7.3 tackles per game and has 7 sacks on the year while Keroack ended the regular season with 5.5 sacks.
