Your thoughts on Adam Cote
My initial thoughts - he's former republican and I have real concerns with his Iraq policy.

But I like his energy policy...

Can he be trusted?

1. I'm in the 2nd CD so I haven't been following the First too closely
Sorry I can't help. I've always like Chellie though.

2. You can trust Chellie.
"Chellie will be a visionary voice in Congress who does not stray from the principles that brought her into public service."

Race Facts

Race Type: Open Seat (currently Democratic)
Primary Opponent: Mike Brennan, Adam Cote, Mark Lawrence & Ethan Strimling
Primary Date: June 10, 2008

"Chellie’s previous attempt at federal office was a testament to her dedication to principles. In 2002, she ran against an incumbent Republican senator and lost in large part because of her stand against the impending Iraq War. “ was wrong,” the organic farmer and small business owner says today. “Everywhere I went, people begged me to stand up and say so. And I knew myself that I could not compromise on that point.” Chellie believes that Congress now needs to immediately end the Iraq occupation and begin repairing relationships with the allies whom we have alienated. “There can be no future for our children and grandchildren if we do not move towards creating peace in the world and reducing the conflict we have created,” she said."

I'm in the 2nd CD also, were I in the 1st, Chellie would be my choice.

3. Cote
Edited on Wed May-14-08 08:13 AM by Shorebound
From what I've read about Cote, he's a Democrat in the Michaud mold, at the opposite end of the Dem spectrum from Chellie Pingree. If Pingree and Strimling divide the progressive vote in the primary, it's entirely possible Cote could win.

BTW, I like his energy policy, too, although it's not all that original.

4. Please elaborate on...
"the opposite end of the Dem spectrum from Chellie."
Michaud is my man so my request is purely academic but
your Cote/Michaud connection has piqued my curiosity.

5. I like

I like the field but would like to hear more of eric and chellie. we've always needed more Michaud's to represent common sense.(could be bias as most of family started out in paper mills)
I think by fall every candidate running for any office will need a viable energy policy.
the sooner we cut our oil consumption the stronger our economy will become. and I don't mean for just the top tier!

6. at my last local dem meeting people were concerned
that he had a republican campaign manager.

That did not sit very well with me. They were also talking about an effort by Republicans that were crossing over for the Primary to vote for him and then registering back to R for the November general election. I guess they had heard this on As Maine Goes (Is that what the show is called?) in the morning.

I am a Chellie supporter and honestly do not pay attention to Cote, but there was some heated discussion surrounding this. I'm not sure if anyone else has heard these rumors.

7. I had heard that Cote was a Republican until recently
I don't know what made him change but I'm pretty sure I've heard that a couple of times.

8. Cote's latest ad...
mentions that impeachment would be a distraction. I can think of a lot of words to describe the relative importance of upholding the constitution and how nobody is above the law. "Distraction" is not one of those words.

That ad, and now that he was recently republican, ended any interest for me.

The more I see of Chellie, the more I like her.

9. Cote might be right.
Impeaching Bush could be avoided by sending him to the gallows, after a brief layover at the Hague.
The rope would be the appropriate end for the worst President ever!

10. Why is impeachment such an important issue at this point?
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 09:46 AM by high density
Two years ago was the time to get going on impeachment. Now I don't see the time for it or reasoning behind this. To spank Bush after the fact? He doesn't care. Cote is right, we need to focus first on items other than impeachment. By the 2009 Congress, impeachment of the previous president should be very very low on the list of priorities.

11. why is impeachment important?
Bush and Cheney set precedents that violate the constitution and totally undermine the balance of power.

The balance of power and especially the ability of the congress to exercise its oversight of the executive branch must be restored to undo those precedents and prevent future abuses by presidents of *any* party.

Furthermore, the evidence that would come out in impeachment trials could be what it takes to pursue criminal action against this administration for treason.

Nobody is supposed to be above the law. Not even bush. If bush had murdered somebody, would you say that "spanking him after the fact won't bring back the person he killed, so we really should just get over it and move on?"

Oh, wait a minute. Bush actually has murdered somebody. A *lot* of somebodies.
